I have a portable 250gig usb hard drive that I connect to my PS3.
I have been thinking about putting Lynux on my PS3 and was wondering if I can install it on my portable hard drive?

If not, can I copy all my PS3 info onto my USB drive, like game data and save so the PS3 harddrive is just for the operating systems?

Not sure about installing Linux on the external hdd, but you can definitely put all your PlayStation settings, saves, videos, demos, etc on the external. I've never tried directly accessing game saves etc, from an external so I don't know if you can launch them from there probably not, but anything you dl off the PlayStation store and be dl'ed onto the external.

You can't install linux on an external drive. It'd be best to use a small partition for linux and use the external for data on there. Then, reserve the larger partition (perhaps a 10/50 split or a 10/70 depending on your model) for your game OS and content. Some gamedata can't be backed up because it is protected. Be sure you check this out first and also, consider the fact that linux on PS3 isn't as useful as you might think. The RAM is low, and although the processor is powerful, you still can't do a lot with it.
