So, supposedly D2CKEYs are not configurable and there are no known configuration discs available. Owing to part luck and part stupidity, I managed to find a way...

The story goes, since I just got my brand new Wii chipped (installed by a professional), I asked my friend to lend me some of his backup Wii games (he also has a modded Wii). However, when I tried them out, my Wii gave me a black screen telling me that the disc could not be read. Now, I know my mod chip works because I have already tried playing original and other backup games in NTSC(U)(the same region as my Wii), so this lead me to believe that these games were probably in PAL format.

Now, here's the stupidity part. I had always assumed that the chip I had was the Wiikey, so I went ahead and did a search online and found the Wiikey configuration disc (available for download from this forum). Neither 1.3 nor 1.2 worked, but finally the 1.3 hack did the trick and allowed me to insert and run Config 1.3 successfully. From there, I simply turned Region Free ON through the menu.

After resetting my Wii, both PAL games worked!

This was great, so I proceeded to try and update my "Wiikey" firmware to 1.9g. After hours of trying (basically all the methods mentioned on here) I still failed for obvious reasons. So I went back online to do some more reading and realized that the only mod chip I could possibly be using would have been the D2CKEY *slaps forehead* since my Wii is brand spankin' new.

Aside from it not having a configuration menu at all, it's suppose to update on it's own as well. Also, it only has PARTIAL regional support for PAL (probably why those games I borrowed didn't work initially).

So now that I discovered all of this by chance, I kind of have mixed feelings. I'm glad I am able to play those PAL games, but on the other hand I don't know if I should keep my system this way. I'm thinking about turning Region Free OFF again using the Wiikey Configuration disc and just let my mod chip play what it allows. I don't want to risk my Wii getting blocked (unless someone here can guarantee me that if I burned the PAL games with WiiBrickBlocker it will be alright). Any opinions? Also, has this ever worked for anyone else with a D2CKEY chip? Should I be weary that I do not have a D2CKEY at all (I do have a D2C Wii system for sure though)?

In summary:
- I have a NTSC(U) D2C Wii that is modded, with firmware 3.1U.
- It would not run PAL games initially but ran NTSC(U) games (both original and backup) perfectly.
- It ran PAL games perfectly upon turning Region Free ON using the Wiikey Configuration disc 1.3 (had to use the HACKED 1.3 in order to run the regular configuration disc).
- I supposedly have a D2CKEY (and can't imagine it to be anything else either)... But you never know, since the chip was installed by someone other than me (an expert).

Thanks for reading (sorry for the long post).

EDIT: The two games were Cooking Mama and Mario Party 8. I have ran both and my Wii has not been blocked. My Wii system is up to date on its firmware (3.1U), so I don't think either game triggered an update of any type either.

Oh yea thats right I forgot.

The d2ckey has a serial interface, and the region override function is set by JUMPERS on the PHYSICAL CHIP.

So I guess your config disk melted the solder on the chip so hot that the contacts were able to bridge and give you override abilities.

Sorry man, but if you ran the config disk and it gave you any type of conformation, you have been had.

You don't have a d2ckey. You have a wiikey.

lol @ eddy - i was trying to subtley say what u did

a) he never had a d2c wii and could have had a cheaper wii fitted in his d2b wii

b) he had a d2c wii and the fitter swapped it for an olde d2b and fitted a wiikey in it

Yes I also drew those conclusions myself. I checked my serial again, both the one on the original box and the system (they matched) and it says that my system is GC2-D2C using a online serial tracker.

The thing is, are those the only two reasons? I couldn't update the "Wiikey" firmware no matter what I tried... And was only able to reach the config. screen after using the hack. Everytime I reload the config disc, it seems to still say my Region Free setting is OFF (but I read on here that this happens to Wiikeys as well). Also, the D2CKEY only has partial PAL support for NTSC systems, so perhaps by default the mod chip just refused to read those specific games. I really don't know the internal works of all of this, so I'm just throwing possibilities out there. Just a question, if the guy really did switch the inside of my system with an older Wii, is there a way for him to transfer my data from my original Wii? I had 600 Wii points left on it, as well as some virtual console games I downloaded, and other extra channels (ie. Mii Channel, my stats and stuff are still the same on it). I know save files are transferable using things like an SD card, but I thought the things I listed were things that are "attached" to the system. And how long does it take for him to make the switch if he did? I only left him for 2 hours and 45 minutes or so. Just enough time to finish up installing a D2CKEY (I watched him solder at the beginning for a bit).

If indeed the only logical explanation is that, then I will contact him. He gave me a contact card and he guaranteed his install for life. I'm not going to unscrew the system myself, I'd rather take it to him and have him open it up in front of me to confirm what is inside.

Anyways, just wanted to see if anyone else who has a D2CKEY is able to access the Wiikey Config menu after using the hack disc.

Just a few facts about the wii that might clear things up.

1) The dvd drive does not store data.

2) The drives are interchangable (or so i've heard)

3) The d2ckey does NOT CONNECT TO THE WII VIA A SERIAL INTERFACE.
There is absolutely, positively, 100% no doubt about it no way to change "settings" that do not exist on the d2ckey through dvd, period.

You might not even have wiikey either, and perhaps one of the clones out there. Yes, there are pal games that do not work on NTSC systems, however this can be due to a variety of reasons. Crappy media, for instance, will make it so it reads only half the time.

Some pal games wont work if you use wiibrickblocker or region free. The rest of the pal games might not work because nintendo doesn't want them to work.

Sorry if we were a little harsh (well, ok me) earlier, but if your Wiikey configuration disk allows you to display a version of the chip (i think, I don't have one), then you have a wiikey. If you can "upgrade" your modchip, you have a wiikey. If you put in SMG and it says "unauthorized modification detected" , you don't have a d2ckey.

No one really knows what you have inside. You'll either have to open it up yourself or call your modder.

Heres a hint.

Quote:
If the d2ckey is installed in the proper place, it will have been put in the MIDDLE of the dvd drive logic board. This means that when you turn on your wii, you should be able to see 2 flashing lights (blue and red) through the empty SD card slot AND the Gamecube controller area (look inbetween the cracks). If you see 2 flashing lights, you have a d2ckey. If no, you don't (generally).

Thanks for the prompt reply. I really appreciate the help.
I can answer a few of the things you've listed.

- It did not display a version of my chip through the configuration menu, simply the version of the Config. disc that I ran. I am also unable to run the configuration disc without using the hack disc first.
- I was unable to update my chip with the Wiikey firmware update no matter what I tried.

I don't have SMG to try out, so I won't be able to do that test as of now. But I'm going to check for the red/blue light you mentioned real quick and get back at you.

EDIT: Alright, I checked. I see flashing blue lights, for sure... However no red light. It was pretty difficult to look through the cracks so either the red light wasn't in my line of sight, or it isn't present at all. This probably means that my D2CKEY was a pre-released version (or maybe even something else?), since those are blue/blue lights. I'm just going to call up the guy that installed my chip for me right now to clear this all up.

EDIT2: Alright... Everything is cleared up! I talked to the guy, he was really nice and explained everything pretty clearly to me. The D2CKEY will read the Wiikey Configuration disc and you will be able to control the menu. You can make changes through the menu as well but ultimately these changes will NOT register. The fact that my games started working afterwards was probably all due to luck (my friend's discs were quite scratched). Wiikey firmware update disc 1.9g can be read as well, but when you try to update, it will fail at the end (that's what happened for me). If anyone who has a D2CKEY can confirm this, that would be great, but for now I'll choose to believe my installer. He immediately offered to open my Wii up for me to check for myself what I have installed (the officially released D2CKEY). Since all games are working just fine, I won't bother for now, but I will definitely take his offer if I run into any problems with SMG.

Excellent reasoning. ALthough, if you can see the blue light, you should have been able to see the red light. Since you think you have a prerelease chip, and you more than likely do, this list might help you. Its a list of tested games on the pre and retail versions.

Thanks for the list, EddyC.
I'm feeling more at ease, but definitely not letting my guard down. My installer explained to me that the red light was probably just blocked, or might not have been blinking at the time since the lights have no real pattern (even the blue one). According to the list you gave me, my chip is definitely not a pre-released one since it ran both the original game and the backup of Mario and Sonic Olympic Games.

I will continue to test out my system and see how it is. If there is a problem, I will have it taken care of ASAP.

Thanks again for all your help.
I hope some of the info I have here also helped out other D2CKEY owners as well. I will update if I find out anything new.

so generally if you don't see a red light, theres no power to the chip? I'm having some problems with my chip at the moment T ,T and it doesn't seem like i can search for things so just randomly clicking links haha

Hi everyone i have a PAL (Wii system) with a D2C Key installed.
I have always allowed for any PAL backup games to update my system and have always used Regionfrii to convert my (NTSC) backups to PAL format without using brickblocker.
I have stuck to the compatibility list which has been 100% correct for the D2CKey chip.
Using a Wiikey configuration disc to gain access to the D2CKey menu is interesting, however im worried that it might disable my system even though access to the unplayable NTSC games would be great.
It would be interesting to see the progress in this subject.

ok an update... good news/bad news

i managed to get all the games to work with a trick or 2 for some. Mostly involved burning new discs after changing the iso's with regionfrii. wii sports rock. But as for SMG it works till the beginning of the level then the game crashes on me, this happens for ghost squad as well thou i managed to play like 2 levels b4 it crashes. sometimes wii golf doesn't want to start after being chosen. this only happened after a week of playing.

i attribute this to 2 instances only.

1 a bad burn
2 some how the discs are getting scratched while in the wii

oh well.... at least i get to play wii sports now. =>

cheers
