So I wanted to watch The Royal Tenenbaums today. I watched it about a year ago and then burned the xvid file to a dvd-r. It looked perfectly fine when I watched it and this is how it looks now:

I use MPC and ffdshow. I tried it on vlc and it looks about the same but, strangely, the colors are different each time I open it. GSpot says this: 510 unneeded bytes at end of file.
What can cause this problem?

Most likely renderer/overlay settings. You must have messed around with them recently or changed them.

When using Media Player Classic, right click on the FFDShow icon that comes up in your system tray. You should see somewhere an option to reset the overlay settings to 'Default'/Recommended, something of that nature. Try resetting them and then restart MPC to see if that makes a difference. If not individually turn off every overlay setting until your video appears normal, then you will see which setting is causing you playback problems.

If none of this has any effect try changing your renderer, again in MPC, go View> Options> Click on the Output heading under Playback.

Now experiment by trying all the different renderers listed and see if that makes a difference.

If all else fails, then you need to uninstall all your codecs/codec packs, clean your registry out and install K-Lite Codec Pack Full:
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Codec_Pack.htm

That should effectively reset all your overlay/renderer settings and your playback should be back to normal.

Hope this helps.
