I have a us wii with 3.1u firmware and 1.9g wiikey firmware. i have played smg original and backup but when i put metroid in it wants to do a system update. i shut the wii off before it updated and it still works like normal. metroid is from the same region as the wii, is it ok to run the update even though that update is older than what the wii currently has?

It wont affect you. You have 3.1 the latest firmware. Enjoy the game.
