I have just started burning DVDs, and like several other posts I've seen here, I cannot get my DVD-R/+Rs to play on a stand-alone DVD player that is supposed to be able to handle these formats. They only seem to play on my PC.

Here are some specifics...

I am using DVD Shrink 2.3 to create VOB, IFO, and BUP files on my hard drive. The DVD I have been trying to copy is not very large, so I have been attempting to copy the whole disc. If I just remove the French audio track and subtitles, it is small enough to fit on the disc without compressing it. In this example, the output from the DVD Shrink process is 27 files in total (14 VOB files, 6 IFO files, 6 BUP files, and 1 "Shoutcast File"(???)).

Once I've created these files, I've been using RecordNow DX to burn the disc. I start by selecting File, New Job, Data Disc. Next, I click on "Add Files and Folders" and I click on the folder on my hard drive with the 27 files. I change the volume label to meaningful name, and then click on "Options". Here, under DVD I select "Track at Once(TAO), Closed" under Recording type, and select "UDF - Up to 128 in filename length, any char., plus 8+3 tree (Bridge)" under File system type before clicking "OK". Finally, under Tools, Options, Data Disc, I make sure "Recognize the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders" is checked, before clicking the red record button. The process seems to go fine, and I even get a message at the end that the recording was successful. I record at 4X, and the blank DVDs I use are also 4X.

I have tried this on both Sony DVD+R and Fuji DVD-R media. Both work on the DVD player on my PC (PowerDVD), but not on the stand-alone players I have tried. Both the RecordNow DX and PowerDVD software came with my recently purchased DVD burner (a Sony DRU-510A). This burner is supposed to be able to record on both + and - media.

I'm guessing that it may be a problem with how I am using RecordNow DX. I've seen from other posts that many have had no problems using this software, but I am wondering if I should try something else (e.g., Nero?).

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am brand new to this, and am already getting frustrated.

Thanks!

I'd suggest trying your DVDs you've made in a friends or neighbors player. I'll bet it's your player, although I've never heard of / run across a 'shoutcast' file.

Thanks, RWG -

You are right in that my current player won't support DVD-R/+R formats (it is several years old), which is a major reason why I am looking to replace it. However, I went into Circuit City and actually placed two of my discs (one +, one -) into working players to see what would happen. Both were supposed to play these, but neither worked. That's why I'm pretty sure there is something wrong with the discs.

Have you tried Nero 6 (or any other program) to do a 1:1 copy? If you try this turn of 'direct copy' and make and image file to copy.

luck-

RecordNow DX is the only thing I've tried so far. I think my next step will be to get Nero to see if that works.

It's worth a shot!

Thanks again...

RWG/Jdilla -

Thanks for your suggestions. I think I've solved my problem.

I tried two things...First, I tried using Nero instead of RecordNow DX to burn the disc. Second, I didn't include that "shoutcast" file that didn't look right. It turns out that the file was a musicmatch file, which is one of the software programs that came bundled with the other software from my dvd burner. I'm not sure why that file was created with the dvd files, though.

At any rate, once I did both of these my discs played fine. They even played on my current dvd player which is 3 or 4 years old (a pleasant surprise!).

Thanks again for your help!

RDL-

Glad you're 'in bizness.' Now...share your info/expertise/insight with others here needing help.

I imagine your RecordNow DX will work for you now w/o the shoutcast file.

Believe it or not, I tried RecordNow DX without the shoutcast file, and it STILL would not play on my home unit...not sure why...Looks like I'll be using Nero from here on out.

As far as sharing my so called "expertise" goes, I will contribute whatever I can.

I would like to second JDILLA's post.

All you need is CloneDVD with AnyDVD running in the background - and ALL of your issues will go away.

There is no settings, no headaches. It does all the compression and decryption you will ever need - ON THE FLY!!

Thanks,

Mayor
