I recently added a second DVD drive to my PC. The DVD-ROM is a GDR8161B. Secondary slave. The burner is the secondary master... Same as it's always been. About the time that I got the second drive, I put a BOATLOAD of data on my hard drive. I went from having about 300G free to having 50G free.

When I rip a movie with DVDShrink, my mouse will randomly and sporadically freeze on me. Keyboard still works fine. Programs still seem to work fine except for a lack of mouse input. When I get my mouse back, mouse input returns, dumps any queue that I'd built up while it was locked up.... if I clidk anywhere, when the mouse finally unfreezes, all those clicks dump out and my computer goes nuts for a little while.

I've defragged the machine. But I'm not sure that has anything to do with this because it happens even during the analyze... when data isn't being written to the HD.

Both DVD drives are in UDMA mode, according to windows.

Help?

How much free memory do you have?

BTW, this sounds like a system problem, not a Shrink problem.

This isn't a problem with the mouse as it works just great ANY other time.

And it turns out that it looks like it's NOT just a dvd-shrink problem. I tried running rawdump and had the same problem. So it's a universal system problem when reading from the DVD-ROM drive (Secondary slave)... Still happens after I replaced the DVD-ROM drive with another (of the same model, though)

I've used system restore SO often in the last (how long has XP been out) X number of years, that I DISABLE it on my computers cause there's no chance I'll ever use it, anyway. The couple of times I've actually tried it, it made things worse.

Any other suggestions? I'd like to determine the cause of the problem and fix that... not just bandaid the issue and hope it doesn't come up again.

If it's a wireless optical mouse, it might be interference from other electrical devices close by. Try using a laser or better yet, a bluetooth mouse instead and see if the problem goes away (laser and bluetooth are less likely to be affected).

Looks like I fixed the problem... The drives were wired up Mobo-master-slave instead of mobo-slave-master. Simple switcheroo and everything is working like it should.
