I want to convert my VHS family tapes to DVD. What do I need for hardware and software. In addition, I am sure that some of the VHS tapes need editing so I don't copy frames of the wall, ceiling and scrabble. Is there something that I can use to edit before burning to DVD.
I have many (many) family tapes to convert and I want to be able to do it as quickly and with the best results to DVD. Your help is appreciated.

Use a Plextor hardware encoder. I did all my home movies/VHS tapes that way. Plextor TV402u or M402u. Excellent USB capture devices. Bought them at Tigerdirect.

My Plextor TV402u is also a TV Tuner. Can record in DIVX format, as well as Mpeg1,Mpeg2 and Mpeg4. Made in Japan, not China . Can record directly to DVD. I bought mine for $75 after rebate. The Plextor name alone means top-of-the-line. Take a closer look at this, believe me, I love mine. I have encoded over 300 movies to Divx High Quality format. Editing software that comes with it, to me, is also about the best you can use. One of most useful things I have ever bought for my PC.

Quote: take a closer look at this, belive me
i did take a closer look at this and belive me plextor is deffinatly not top of the line the Ati Tv Wonder that shummyr stated is Much better than any of these plextors , I went to there site to my dis pleaser it looks like my trash can. the ulead studio that it comes with isnt bad but its far from the pinnacle studio 11 that your pinnacle capture card comes with and who cares if it converts straight to dvd Any dazzle dose the same, and can recored to avi format as well. this here is an hd capture card for 50 dollars less than the price you would pay for the plextor http://www.pinnaclesys.com/PublicSite/us...mate+version+11
@dmerrick this here would be more suitable for dvd makeing only http://www.pinnaclesys.com/PublicSite/us.../DVD+Maker+Plus

So, if I am correct after reading the information,
I plug my vcr into the piece of hardware they provide, plug the hardware into my 2.0 usb hub and using their hardware, I can edit, remove sections, add titles with the software provided by Pinnacle?

Check out Tigerdirect. Plextor TV402U is $60 after rebates, until the end of the month. Unbelievable deal. Wasn't Plextor the 1st Divx-Certified capture device? USB 2.0 so I take it with me in my laptop bag when I need to. Fits in the palm of my hand. I use it for all my regular TV recordings also. Easy to turn favorite TV show(s) into DVD format. Remember, this is Hardware Encoder, not Software Encoder, so CPU usage is small. I have 2 different models, use them constantly, and love 'em.

I finally used VideoReDo Plus on a 21 day trial. It had a bit of a learning curve but I know understand a little of what I am doing and it is working great. When the trial is over, I will probably buy it.
Thanks everyone for the help.

I'm wondering if converting vhs to dvd allows for pause? For instance I have 30 min on one tape and 30 min on the other and so on, can I record all that on one dvd?
When recording onto dvd media does it have to be continuous burn?
If not do I capture all videos first to my hard drive and then burn?
thanks

From my perspective, I have purchased 3 new VHS tapes and for the most part copied the smaller segments onto one VHS tape. I have then copied that to DVD and edited it with VideoReDo Plus and burned the final DVD. I have been pleased with the results. I am sure there are people out there who can a suggest a less time consuming process but this has worked for me.
I have on occasion, copied a short half hour tape to DVD and then additional segments until the DVD disc is full. Then finalized the DVD and edited with VideoReDo Plus. Again, I am sure there is an easier way to do it this is working for me.
