I got this last night and have had problems with it. So far, I have been using mainly Shrink to back-up. When you open the program the set-up is nice and has much of what makes Shrink good and some more.First of all, it does not work with AnyDVD, so not that great if you have a mixture of different region disks to back-up. Next, I understand the legal reasons why they do not have a decrypter built in for backing up, so I wont go there, but it does add a lot more time to a project. I used DVD decrypter to rip and then opened in ?Copy entire DVD to DVD? mode. It analysed the file like Shrink with a preview screen but it took 4 mins! Way over the normal 1-2 mins I get on most movies. Analysing complete, you then get the main portion of the program. If you have used Shrink before, then it won?t take long to pick up, one nice addition is the ?disable? function. Basically, for those of you that would like to keep the menu but loose the extras or other stuff you can by just selecting the folder that you don?t want and hit the icon. If you are not bothered, you just select the ?Remake DVD? option which is essentially the ?Re-author? function in Shrink without the click ?n? drag. I did a test by keeping the menu and adjusting the compression to get the best out of the movie and set my target size to suite the disks that I am using, the default is DVD-5 and you can set it as a custom. Hit ?next? and then it gives you a couple of options either to burn at once or rip to the hard drive. I set burn at once and off it went. The progress screen is nice and you get a video preview as it is running. Here is where the first problem happened, it took ages to rip and burn (35 mins) then I realised that it had over burned and I had to close down/restart to get the disk out. It would appear that even though I set my target size under the DVD-5 generously to allow for end of disk error, it went way over. So I did another test, this time following exactly the same steps, but this time decided to burn to the hard drive so I could figure out how big the file was. It took 45 mins to Rip!!!! So with Decrypter time I was up to 1:30 already. Now the file size, it showed up on the target that I set which was odd. So I burned another copy but still had the over burn problem.
To sum up-
It could my system, but seeing as everything else I have works OK, I can only deduce that Recode has bugs that need sorting. Even then, with the lack of decrypter therefore the added time and steps to get a back-up, the few nice additions are not enough for me to stop using Shrink for the time being.
Anybody else have problems?
