Hi - I have had many problems with trying to copy DVDs- eventually I have hit on my winning formula which is to copy a DVD with DVDShrink and then burn it using Nero...BUT...I have to compress the file by about 50 percent- then it always copies ok- if I just try to burn the disc using whatever compression ratio DVDShrink has put it at automatically (90 or 95 percent or so usually) either the burning process mucks up or the copy that is produced has glitches.
Why is this? My computer is quite low spec and I wa wondering if I increased the RAM would that help at all and enable me to higher the compression ratio?
Any advice much appreciated.
Cheers.
James
I haven't used shrink in a while now, but I use to use it all the time. Basically go to Edit -> Preferences In the window that opens you will see that DVD Shrink has the Preferences set to DVD-5 (4.7GB). Click the down arrow and select custom. Now in the MB box put 4430 if your media is not that great.
Sometimes burning to the outside edge of the media causes problems. The second step to take is to make sure that you are not burning too fast. I normally say to burn at 8X but if your system is slower, then I would suggest burning at 4X.
Use quality media. I use Taiyo Yuden made in Japan. Also Verbatim is good as well as Ritek. Using quality media is important. If you buy in bulk you may get discount prices. I shop at supermediastore.com
Now even though Nero is a great program, I have learned that another great burning program that is free is ImgBurn. You may burn ISO images or VIDEO_TS folder if you set it up to do so. ImgBurn Link
To burn a VIDEO_TS folder follow the instructions my buddy wrote. Alkohol Guide Link
Hope that helps you out. Oh, and also increasing the memory in your machine will help. That is one reason that I suggested for you to burn slower. Do the same with ImgBurn as well. Good Luck!!
Im having a related problem and wondered if you could give me some advice.
I have used DVDFab to produce 5gb uncompressed VOB files. When importing into DVD shrink it will not auto compress or let me compress manually. On manual it will only let me compress by 10%.
Pete917-
If you are using the free version of DVDFab HD then you open the VIDEO_TS folder in DVD Shrink. If you are using a paid version of the program then you shouldn't need to use Shrink at all. I do not have or use the paid for version, but one of my friends has it.

Most likely you are using the free version from this statement. You are wrong in saying that it is uncompressed 5GB in the fact that a DL media movie may hold up to 7.95GB of data. A DVD-5 however only holds 4.38GB of data.
If you would, please be a little more specific in what exactly you are asking. If DVD Shrink will not open the VIDEO_TS folder then you probably have either an error on the machine, or a corrupt download of DVD Shrink. You may need to remove it and install it once again.
When you talking about compression, you want to keep the number as high as possible. Set your maximum output size like what I explained above. When I used Shrink I would try to keep my compression around 70% or higher. You can do this by using additional programs to remove items from the original DVD Sructure. VobBlanker is a free program that you may use to help with this, unless you want to buy a powerful program to use.
I don't know if that answered any of your questions or not. Feel free to give me a little more information so that I may explain it to you in greater detail.
Thanks for that, I'll try to explain myself a little better.
I used the free version of DVDFab HD v4.0 to rip a 7GB DVD. I ripped the movie only which took the Video_TS folder size down to 5GB.
Next I opened the Video_TS folder in DVD Shrink. DVD Shrink was set to auto compress, but didnt achieve sufficient compression to fit it on a Single Layer disc. I tried setting it to manual but it wouldnt let me shrink it less than 90% (which isnt enough).
I tried burning the files using nero recode, and that reported that it was unable to compress the VOB files to fit on a single layer disc, so I dont think that DVD Shrink is corrupted.
What is the title of the movie? It could very well be the structure of the DVD that is causing the error. Did Shrink Analyze the movie without a problem? It could also be that DVDFab encountered an error in the rip. It will not report that it did. Did you try to play the movie on your computer?
It plays fine from my hard drive. DVD Shrink reads the files OK, then has trouble with the compression. Its interesting that Nero Recode had the same problem.
I use a program called DVD ReMake Pro, but I use to use a program called VobBlanker. Maybe running the VIDEO_TS folder through VobBlanker will help clean up the navigation of the DVD. You may download it here: jsoto VobBlanker Link
It is actually a great program to use as well as seeing if it will help organize the DVD Structure. You will find some basic guides for the use of it, but unless you want to remove items from the cells you may do that. You will need to tell it where to read from just like in DVD Shrink, and then you will need to tell it where to process to. Here is another basic guide that may help a little more. My buddy alkohol wrote it and it has nice pics to help explain the process. alkohols guide to VobBlanker Link
The other thing that you could try is downloading the little free program called Free DVD at the DVDFab site: Free DVD I don't know if that will work or not.
Maybe post a pic of what is happening and it may help me a little more.
