For people that buy online, Taiyo Yuden is the way to go. Otherwise, Verbatim.

Look how many shady names come up with a bogus MCC...004:

How about "Royal Falcon", "Sony", and "Maxwell" DVD discs? Ar ethey OK? How important is the name of the company making the discs? I thought the technology for making the DVDs is roughly the same, so it wouldn't matter which brand the DVD is.

well you're 100% wrong with that statement. It does matter who makes the blank DVD. never heard of Royal Falcon so we can assume there junk , Sony media is pretty good stuff and Maxell can be hit and miss.Taiyo Yuden is the best blank media in the world hands down Verbatim follows a close second but there has been problems as of late with some Verbatim. download DVD Identifier to see what your blank media codes out as

http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/

cmc mag is to be completely avoided !!

I tried using DVD Identifier but it wouldn't even identify my CD/DVD drive. It just sat there with everything greyed. When does it work? How does one get this program to recognize existing drives?

Place a blank disk into your burner drive and dvd identifier will start. You will see the info specs of your media.

Does DVDIdentifier work with already-burnt DVDs?

The MID code that is used to identify the disc is part of the field codes molded into a disc's plastic base along with the laser guide groove. This section of the disc can only be read by DVD recorders; DVD players never access this section because they don't need that kind of information. Recordings on a disc only take place in the grooved area; so the MID and field codes are unaffected by any recording, and the DVDIdentifier software can access the information from a DVD recorder--but not a DVD reader/player.
