Hello, I need your help, I have to compress about 50 avi's to cut some space from my HDD, all these files are already encoded using Xvid, but I want to cut their size from 700MB to 350MB using Xvid codec.

also I want to compress their audio from 128 VBR to something smaller to save space.

so what program should I use for this? I don't care if it's free or paid software.

and what settings should I use? like what bitrate, or anything else to get the best video/audio quality at the half size (kinda hard, from 700 to 350MB, that's half the size).

thanks.

These are the expirements I ran.

Using winavi video converter version 8.0 and my AMD 4800 x2 cpu
using winavi default xvid video/audio codecs.

I converted an xvid file original size 700mb (video 672x272 audio 192kbs)

1. (video 320x224 audio 192kbs) file size 374mb.
2. (video 320x224 audio 128kbs) file size 323mb.
3. (video 320x224 audio 64kbs) file size 272mb.

Each conversion took less than 10 minutes, they where all viewable but more like vhs quality (extended play mode).
Winavi can batch convert numerous files at one time with no problem and turn off your computer when it's done.

thanks for sharing (btw I also own AMD 4800+ x2 ).
but as I know, WinAvi isn't very good when it comes to quality, sure it's easy to use and fast, but when it comes to the quality, it looks terrible compared to other encoders.

anyways I've just read that either RMVB or MP4 are better than Xvid for this mission, is that true? (and if true sorry for posting in the wrong forum).

I've also read that x256 is better for lower bitrate but it isn't atable yet.
oh god, this is difficult.

anyways if you guys have some answers or websites have the infromation I need I'd be thankful.
sorry again for all these Qs and thank you guys.

I have a couple dozens RMVBs, all around 250-350 MB. The quality is very good.
For converting to mp4, you could also try Super , it is very customizable and supports batch conversion.
