noob question but how do I combine divx files and get rid of subtitles

Probably a noob question but I have 2 divx movies, part1 and part2, and they both have chinese subtitles in them. So from what I understand if the subtitles are "hard-subbed" their is nothing I can do. How do I know if they are hard subbed? And how do I fix it if its not. Also, how do I combine the two to make it one movie. Is there a program that can do both? Even better would be if I could convert it to a standard avi AND combine them AND get rid of subtitles. Any help?
