I just bought a new computer with a dvd burner,so I thought I would try to master copying some of my dvd's. This is what I've done as well as what happened afterward.

I burned a dvd, and it wouldn't play in any of my players (says disc error), so I went to the pawn shop and bought a cheapy dvd recorder (without a remote, and there were no fast forward, back, etc. buttons on it), well my movie worked on it, but the dvd player was not very good and it jumped (even with other movies it did this).
The movie also played on my computer. Well, I decided to burn 2 more movies....They both went straight to chapter 10 and also both played on my computer. I decided to take the dvd recorder back to the pawn shop and get one with either a remote or the buttons. I bring it home and NONE of the 3 movies I burned would play on it. The brand is: Magnavox DVD Recorder. It says that it is DVD-RW compatible, so shouldn't it also play DVD-R's? All the movies play fine on the computer.

This is what I used to burn:

DVD-Shrink to encoed and NERO 8 to burn. I am burning this in ISO format, I believe.

Just to let you know....I am totally lost. I don't know what I am doing really, but must be doing something right, as the 1st movie actually worked. PLease help.

Most problems are burning the disk too fast on media that is not the best.
Often the burned disk will play on the PC , but not on the standalone unit.
Reset the burning speed to 4x and if you can, get some 'Verbatim' brand DVD's.
This way you eliminate two possible sources of trouble.

You are using poor quality discs.
Also, they are DVD+R , and some players don't play DVD+R. If your burner is capable of booktyping, changing the booktype to DVD-ROM will ensue greater compatibility with your DVD players.
