I recently began using AutoGK, converting my DVDs to AVI files and I noticed something with my results. I've seen a lot of quality movie AVIs, from 700 to 2gigs, looking amazing. I used a little program called AVICodec to just look into the information on the encoding process for some of these videos that I have, and then of course compared them to mine. What I noticed is that the other videos, in the "quality" they're all in the 70-80% range and bitrate is high in the 1700-2000 range and mine are in the 60% quality range with bitrate of 1500-1600 range. Now, the question is... how do I achieve a better overall rip with the software, AutoGK? It doesn't seem to have a lot of control were you can output a video bitrate of your choosing, and I of course notice that AUTOGK, really encodes through VIRTUALDUB - so is it VirtualDub where I have to tweak something? Or is it simply the length of film that has an affect on the bitrate and quality end result after encoding?

because-- I encoded a film that's 1:51 hrs, in 2CD and this is the INFO from AVICodec

File : 1.35 GB (1.35 GB), duration: 1:51:57, type: AVI, 1 audio stream(s), quality: 64 %, VirtualDubMod 1.5.10.2 (build 2540/release), ,
Video : 1.25 GB, 1600 Kbps, 23.976 fps, 720*304 (Unknown), DX50 = DivXNetworks Divx v5, Supported
Audio : 102 MB, 128 Kbps, 48000 Hz, 2 channels, 0x55 = Lame MP3, CBR, , Supported

here's another film I encoded with AutoGK

-----
G:\SAVING_PRIVATE_RYAN\VIDEO_TS\SAVING_PRIVATE_RYAN.avi

File : 2.05 GB (1.98 GB), duration: 2:49:27, type: AVI, 1 audio stream(s), quality: 61 %, VirtualDubMod 1.5.4.1 (build 2178/release), ,
Video : 1.83 GB, 1550 Kbps, 23.976 fps, 608*352 (16:9), XVID = XVID Mpeg-4, Supported
Audio : 155 MB, 128 Kbps, 48000 Hz, 2 channels, 0x55 = Lame MP3, VBR, , Supported

am I overreacting with these quality and bitrate results or is there a way to tweak the process to get a better end result. You see, my gripe is that quality result; 61%, 64% - i'd really like to achieve the rip in the 75-85% range with a reasonable 2CD (1.39gig) or 3CD (1.98gig) size

Is AutoGK really the program to use or should I use something else for encoding my DVDs into AVI that gives a nicer bitrate and overall quality?

I myself use AutoGK all the time when I am keeping a nice copy of a dvd on my pc. I think you are using the correct program. I would not myself recommend anything else. I know its been awhile since you wrote this Article but please be Patient ,once in awhile a question does not get answered like yours and takes time. Sorry for the delay. As I am speaking for others as well.
