I've got a slimline PS2 (75003) in which I've just installed a Duo 3 Gold modchip. I'm not new to soldering, but this is only my third PS2 chip installation, and it's my first on a slimline and first with a Duo.

Everything seems to have gone fine, the PS2 powers up, I can use the browser fine, I can even get the chip into disabled mode by holding down Start and pressing reset.

However - the console won't read any games. I should mention that before I installed the chip it wasn't reading any DVDs at all (movies or PS2 games), but it was reading CDs (audio and PSX games) absolutely fine. I was planning on getting a new laser after I'd successfully chipped it, not being entirely confident in my ability. Now it still reads audio CDs and plays the music fine, but it won't read any PSX games, original or backups - the disk spins for a while, then comes to a halt and I get the old 'Please insert a Playstation or Playstation 2 disk' message.

So I'm just wondering - is this just the laser dying on me further? Or is there anything I could have overlooked during the install that could have caused this? Any bad connections perhaps. Are there any points I should check in particular? I feel like I've got the chip installed ok as I can get it to say 'Disabled' on screen, but the fact that my laser has stopped working at the same time, and only on PSX games, feels like more than a coincidence. I might try removing the chip to see if it plays PSX games again, but don't feel like undoing my entire afternoon's work just yet!

Any suggestions?

Hi Red,

Which mother board do you have? Check wires B, G, H, I, and S. Make sure you haven't shorted S to any of the resistors that are next to the Cap for point S. Also, make sure you haven't shorted points B-I to the copper plane around each point.

Seeing that your console boots fine, all of your bios wires, M, N, O, P, Q, R, T, U, V, and W are correct and are making good contact. Make sure there are no globs of solder anywhere. Verify that all solder joints are smooth and shiny. If not, reflow the joint with a little flux.

Sorry, I overlooked that the console wasn't reading any game disks before the mod.

Check all of the fuses on the MB. That's a fairly newer console, but if the fuses are good and you have no shorts anywhere, sounds like a laser problem.

$40 should get you a new one.
