I was just quickly glancing over SmartRipper (Hollowman) when I noticed that it can tell you exactly what aspect ratio to use and a whole bunch of other crap too:

COMPRESSION: MPEG2
TV SYSTEM: NTSC
ASPECT RATIO: 16:9
DISPLAY MODE: Pan-Scan
RESOLUTION: 720x480
LETTERBOXED: No
MODE: Camera

So I took the bait and fired off a quick VCD of (the first 30 seconds of chapter 7). And of the four aspect ratio options available, Pan-Scan was the one that looked thr crappiest and things were off the screen etc (I compared to the actual DVD playback and it MEDIUM was the correct choice). I did it again for an AVI (XviD, 704x480) and again, and this time Pan-Scan resulted in a movie that filled the entire screen but the scale was not fukt. --- Again however MEDIUM was the correct settubg

SmartRipper lying to me? Thoughts? Opinions?
