Hello, my name is Mike. I'm an expert on the Sony PSP, but am branching my knowledge out to the 360. I just bought a brand new xbox 360 Elite. I broke the seal (makes no difference to me, but might for Microsoft) and installed a Talismoon Whisperfan. From what I've read, it's a great improvement. So everything working now perfectly, no problems. It has a Hitachi DVD drive (unsure of specific model). I've read the guide to installing the iXtreme Firmware. It makes me nervous because my computer (custom build) does not has a VIA chipset, it's Intel x38. It recognizes the DVD drive when connected and powered, no problem. I downloaded iPrep and firmware tools 1.2. Everything is installed on my 512MB USB. My BIOS is configured to boot to this device as the primary and I've disconnected every other device. But I'm a little hesitant to go any farther than this. As I have broken the seal, if I fubar it, i would have just burned $500 worth of equipment. So my question is, is there a modchip I could buy (without soldiering anything) that would allow me to play legally backed-up copies of 360 games without the risk of flashing firmwares. Or should I just suck it up and try my best and hope for the best?
Guides, walkthroughs, or video tutorials would be appreciated if such a modchip does not exist. I know I should have done more research before breaking the seal, but from what I understand, any help I could get, they couldn't help because I wouldn't know what the DVD drive is anyway.
well since you have the elite version, i imagine you have the 79 model of the hitachi drive. this would require you to solder a chip into the drive, before you can even flash it. and no there are no solderless chips that can be used.

woo, woo, woo. Hold up! ROM VER: 0079FL. No where in the manual does it say anything about soldering. Says most Hitachi-LG Drives are essentially the same and use the same meathod: a SLAX Live Disc. Oh boy, good think i asked a question before doing something stupid. You have any links that will tell me step-by-step what to do?
yes and no, you can swap drives, but you have to get the orig.bin off of your 79 drive, which would require the passkey, so either way, you are going to have to solder in the chip if you want to flash your current drive, or replace it with a new drive.
Ive heard of only one solution that still requires soldering I think.Its called NMe2.0 (or something like that)Its a chip that works by itself for all consoles..For more info goto www.team-underdog.com...I have an elite to with a v79.Im not gonna flash it.Just mod it.So my opinion is that if your sure you know how to solder and remove the epoxy formula on the dvd drives board,you should do it.If you havenet soldered before,dont take the risk.You can lose that investment of 400 dollars.By the way if you have a Hitachi drive,you dont need Iprep and all that stuff.You need to flash it with Firmware Toolbox 4.6.Get it off xbins.That can be all downloaded at www.360mods.com.Hope this helped.
