As my sister-in-law's living room is an odd size it does not lend itself to conventional furniture placement and therefore I need some help in determining the ideal (or as close-to-ideal) 5.1 speaker placement for her.

This is a drawing of the living room. Not exactly to scale, but close enough for you to see what my issue is. Her "main seating spot" is the sofa at the end away from the tv.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Couldn't you just do this:

Maybe center the RL speaker more towards the chair in the back? Looks like you will need to run the speaker cable under the carpet or, along the wall.

I would move the tv and equipment, beside the door, in front of the couch. A speaker on left side of door, and speaker on right side of tv, but about the same distance from tv, as the one on other side of door. Then rear speakers, on wall, behind and at the end of the couch.
But that's just me.
That would make an odd layout, a non-issue.

Since it's not to scale, if there's not enough room to put it there, I'd rearrange the furniture, and face the couch and coffee table towards the tv, so you're directly in front of it, instead of at an angle, and then use Goodswipe's suggestion.

Yea, I'm with JVC on this one. I'd put the tv in front of the couch next to the door so that you don't have that weird viewing angle. Also, having the speakers directly behind you would sound much better then spread out over the room.
