Which of these two chips should I get, and why? Also, is there ANY need for the chip after I have installed the firmware on my Elite? I hear the only thing a chip does is active some B Mode, which is needed in order to install a new firmware..
No, your confused, those chips are used instead of custom firmware. What you are reffering to is called a blaster 360 which allows for easier firmware updating and putting a drive in mode b.
you need to go hereand find then download textbooks guide.
read the guide, and read it again, in there it will show you how to idebtify what dvd drive is in your console, you probably only need to flash.
just get the guide and read it.

I'll definitely prefer firmware hack over a chip that "replaces" the firmware hack though, since I guess a chip would make it more risky to be on Live.. So I guess I'll need to have the Blaster installed, install the firmware and the deactivate the blaster again to be safest? I mean, otherwise I guess Live could detect the Blaster like the Xbox1 XBL could detect an active chip?

No, the blaster just assists in flashing the firmware. You dont need the blaster at all, it just makes it so that you dont have to open your xbox 360 again to re flash it. You saying your going to deactivate it dosen't make sense. Also, the nme 2.0 chip is just as secure at going on live as flashing with stealth firmware, just more expensive.
Im going to buy one of those two chips I mentioned then, since they are just as secure as hacked firmware.. So I have two questions
-So which of these two chips should I get?
-And if I get my friend to install the chip, do I need to install a new firmware as well then if I want to be able to play backups? Or is it just good to go after installing the chip?
If your going to get a chip I would recommend the nme 2 http://www.nme2.com/. Read the website for all the info you need but after the chip is installed, and you have a ben q drive, you have to manually switch the xbox 360 to play backups(done by holding the power button when booting) and thats all you need.
