DMA is usually more involved in burning, it should not affect how anydvd and shrink itegrally work together.

This may have nothing to do with your problem but I installed a new dvd drive - a Sony. It was rated as an 18X write max drive but it was taking forever to read, analyze and burn a dvd.
I was finally advised my a supervisor at Sony Customer Support that their burners don't perform well with multiple editing or burning programs sharing the registry of a PC - particularly Roxio.
I removed Roxio and cleaned up my PCs registry and performance improved but I finally bought a different make drive and problem was solved - weird!

Right now, I like Lite-on, Pioneer and Samsung burners. $ony'S IMHO are no good, and Plextors are pioneers with Nec chip seta ( not worth the premium )

any lite-on burners are good IMO, i have one of the LH-20 series and have had no problems with it.
could you be more specific about what is slow? the whole process?
only when using those 2 programs?
do you rip to the HDD first?
what part of the process? transcoding? Burning?

I used to transfer the movies to my HD @ 1st then shrink but now i just use shrink and now I find that the initial analyzing process is 17+ minutes ............up from 2 minutes. yes the transcoding and burning usually take almost 2 hours each. A deep analysis well over 2 hours. I am not sure if it is my processor or my burner but I am ready to buy a whole new desktop!!!!!!!!

ccramsfan-
What is the version of your firmware on your drive? Firmware can be an issue in many cases when it comes to burning. Use Nero to determine what your firmware is. DMA is only an issue when burning. If you do need to check to make sure it is enabled you do that in the device manager. Here is a guide by my buddy alkohol that may help. Alkohols Guide Link

These specs tell me that your machine is very slow. A defrag and a clean are in order. It also tells me that your RAM is not functioning correctly. 1Gig of memory = 1024MB. You are showing that you only have 768MB of RAM. This could be what is causing the problem.
First thing you need to do is a full defrag of your HDD. A fantastic and free program for this is called AusLogics Disk Defrag. You may download it here AusLogics Link
As born2ride mentioned some PC maintenance may be in order as well. CCleaner is a good little registry tool. You may download it here: CCleaner Link
I think that the defrag will do the trick, but it is important to keep your machine at optimal performance. I could mention all kinds of free cleaning tools to use to clean your machine, but I think that this will solve the problem. I would also download and optimize your RAM using RAM Def XT. It is also a free program and you may download it here: RAM Def XT Link
I hope that solves the problem that you are having.

born2ride-
actually you are correct. That was a mistake on my part. DMA (Direct Memory Access) Allows for the memory to be used in both reading and writing data taking the burden off the CPU. PIO (Programming Input/Output)the CPU is handling the reading or writing to a drive.
