Avi to DVD no sound after 50/60mins.

After many many hours of various guides and conversion programs I am still failling to convert a avi to dvd format. The results I am getting is everything is OK for about the 1st 50mins then I either get no sound or very bad out of sync (maybe 3-5 mins difference) The programs I am using are gpsot & tmpgenc with Ifoedit. I have also tried Ulead DVD maker. I have also tried various avi files with the same problem. I guess there must be a simple mistake somewhere or do I have to extract the audio and convert the audio & video serperate ? Would this not lead to sync problems ?

would it help if I de-installed all codecs and install only the valid codec required for the specific AVI file.

Any other thoughts?
