Does anyone know if the Onkyo txsr804 receiver is capable of producing DTS-MA and Dolby True HD? If not is it possible to download these formats to the receiver, it has an R232 port? I have emailed Onkyo but have not received a reply.
Also, is it possible to produce these formats through an optical cable or only through HDMI?
The 804 does not process the HD audio formats, over HDMI, like the 805 does, but if the Blu ray player has the 5.1 analog outputs, you can get them formats over the 5.1 analog inputs of the 804. The 805 is a better buy.................
It is not possible to get the new HD audio formats over an optical cable. It's only possible with HDMI or the 5.1/7.1 analog connections.
Optical cable doesn't have the bandwidth to carry the HD signal so, you must use 5.1 analog cables.
The 5.1 analog inputs will be on the back of the receiver, this is where you will plug in the cables coming from your DVD player if the player has the outputs.
