I'm using Magic DVD Copier and all the movies I backed up, skip all the time. The DVD-R discs are brand new. So the discs aren't the problem. What am I doing wrong? Is there a better program out there that I can use?

:~)!HMMM...you can have a 5 years old disc to burn a movie onto and it will play excellent if the disc is high quality. "Brand new" means nothing, has nothing to do with the quality of the disc.
What brand is your disc? How fast are you burning?
Not familiar with Magic DVD Copier, but you might want to consider updating your software with some of the best out there:
DVDFab HD Decrypter , DVD Shrink and IMgBurn. Free!

Also, is your burner's firmware up to date?

Doesn't matter at all if their brand new, what counts is the BRAND itself!
Cheaper, nasty brands can you horrible backups which sometimes even refuse to play at all.
Also what speed are you burning at? If you burn at too fast/unsupported speed that your DVD-R's can't handle you can end up with a lot of bad/unreadable sectors.
As Cyprus said, Magic DVD Copier sounds a bit tacky, try some much better programs like:
DVD Shrink
Clone DVD
Nero Recode 2

I'm using Maxell discs. I read somewhere that japanese made discs work the best. my laptop is brand new so im pretty sure the firmware is up to date. i'm not sure what speed im burning at, magic dvd copier doesn't say. i tryed dvdshrink, but i couldn't get it to work right. about dvdfab, does that do regular dvds(not hddvd)?

If you do find any japanese made discs in a retail store, they are good. It would probably be Sony(TY), Fuji(TY) or Maxell, they are all good-again, if Made In Japan. Otherwise, get Taiyo Yuden like the poster above suggested(they are only sold online), or get Verbatim, made in Taiwan, if you want to walk in and buy some discs.
