I have a Wii NTSC USA (RVL 001) with a chip in, which I do not know the make.
The Wii was bought in Phuket and has never been connected to the internet.
My son tried to play Super Mario Galaxy and accepted the update BUT the game was PAL.....
I have tried everything to get back the settings, the games play ok but I can't change the settings and have 3 sets of weather/news channels.

I have tried SMG NTSC U = no joy
I have tried update 1.9b and g = no joy
I have tried the config files 1.3 = no joy just keep getting the red error after the 100% check.
I have tried the recover 1.9b = no joy.
I have tried Links Crossbow NTSC U = no joy.

Is there another way of connecting to the internet for the update or can any one recommend a game with higher firmware than SMG to get the correct region update.

I am in the UK so can only download NTSC U games from the net.

Please help........

Apparently 'Super Smash Bros Brawl' has an update you could try.

I just did a quick search but couldn't find it for download yet, but maybe you know of better sources.

As for the extra channels; I don't think its possible to delete them completely, but they can be moved to another page (move the pointer to the channel, hold down B, hold down A, drag the channel? (sorry, don't really know, try it and see what happens))

Hope you can get this sorted.

Looked at the game, due out on the 9 March 2008 in the UK.
Will just have to wait until I can get it and try it on my Wii

Sorry, forgot to mention that because you have an NTSC-U console, you must use the NTSC-U version of the game. Otherwise you'll end up back where you started (semi-bricked).

Thanks sparkz for your help.
Am I right in thinking there are two firmwares running on my Wii:
one for the Wii and one for the chip?
Would finding the type of wii chip help or is it the wii firmware that needs updating back to NTSC?
Is it like a CD/DVD rom that you can change the region by using certain disc's and I have done this to the wii dvd rom or just the firmware?
Is the firmware for the chip still region free because I can play different games?
New to all this but getting there slowly.
All advice welcome, knowledge is key.....

Yes, there are two firmwares. One for your mod chip, and for the Wii operating system.

Semi bricking occurs when you try to update you Wii OS firmware with a firmware from a different region...... In your case you have an NTSC-U Wii, and tried to update it with a PAL update. Essentially your Wii is a bit... confused!

To get out of this situation you need to update you Wii OS firmware with its 'native' region (NTSC-U). Hence why you need to use an NTSC-U version of the game. You could update through the Wii settings, but unfortunately they are inaccessible for the moment. You will get them back once you update with the game.

Your modchip should be unaffected through all this, but you should try to find out what type you have so you can update its firware if necessary too. The only real to know what chip you have is to look inside I'm afraid.
