I'm trying to split a 720mb movies into two parts, in a certain spot. The first split file will be a little smaller. I followed the direction I found on here for that on many other files and it worked like a charm. BUT when I opened up this file, VirtualDub said that if I used the "Direct stream copy" feature that the audio would not match the vid, and it didn't match. So I did what it suggested, and that was to use "Full process mode" instead. Now when I do it this way just the FIRST file (the smaller one of the two) comes out at over 26GB... what the hell am I trying to do wrong??
I'm not exactly clear about the message you received, but when saving the the file, if the video is not being re-compressed, you would select 'Direct Stream Copy' from the Video sub-menu.
The video would be saved unchanged in size.
If however you select 'Full processing mode' from the video menu, you either select a compression method (to match the source, XviD?) else the video is saved in raw format and it will be a huge file.
"[!] AVI: Variable bitrate (VBR) audio detected. VBR audio in AVI is
non-standard and you may encounter sync errors up to 118809ms when
attempting to extract WAV files or processing the audio in Direct Stream
Copy mode. Full Processing mode is recommended to decompress or recompress

If you get that message with the original file, then before splitting it, you can convert the audio to CBR.
Check the audio sampling rate [File > File Information] and note it.
The procedure is to save the audio in WAV format, then reload it.
Compress to a CBR format using the Lame mp3 compressor.
Save the AVI with a new name.
The video will not be re-compressed, so there is no loss of quality.
Select Audio > Full Processing Mode > Compression > No Compression > Click File > Save Wave > Save to folder of choice.
Click Audio > Wav Audio > choose the Wave file that you just saved > Click Compression > Lame MP3 > 48000Hz 128kbps CBR Stereo 16kb/s or 44100Hz, etc (depending on the source, you will shown a list of available rates).
Click Video > Direct Stream Copy > Click File > Save as AVI
Now the AVI has a CBR audio stream, VirtualDub will not complain and as long as you split the new AVI on a key frame, there will be no sync problems.
When you split the new AVI take care to use Direct Stream processing for the video and audio and there will be no loss of quality - and no huge files.

Whoaa... Why recode the audio? Recoding VBR mp3 to CBR mp3, will sound horrible. Why not just use VirtualDubMod? I have found it handles VBR mp3 without a problem. When the warning message comes up, just choose "no" to the re-header option. Set direct stream to both the video and audio.

Are you talking about the warning message I get when I first open the video file with Vdub? If so there is only one choice and it's "ok". But yeah I'mm still trying to figure this out. I didn't think it was going to be this hard.
AVImux will split the file with no problems.
Audio: MP3 VBR
Perfect audio/video sync, both halves(played them back through MPC). Took less than 5 minutes. You can split at the exact spot you want.
