Hi cormega,
Check your DVD burner and see what DVD media format it supports. If you have a burner that only supports -R media then + media won't work in it. I have a Pioneer burner that supports both and seems to burn both equally well. I got a good deal on Memorex +R 4X media and have been using those with good results.

One additional thought re: whether to utilize +r or -r media:
Please check your standalone, PC and Playstation consoles to ensure they provide +r readability! If so, the quality of +r media is arguably better. But the debate quickly becomes meaningless if your equipment fails to read +r media.

how can i tell if my xbox plays dvd-r or dvd+r? same with my computer, and what media might play +r specifically and -R specifically

DVD-R's were created by Hewlett-Pakard DVD+R's were created by SONY the trend is that the +R's are what most dvd players will play back so if you can use +R media use it it's much more reliable, preferably Verbatim DVD+R disks.

not true, ka.
Dvd-r were the original recordable dvd as defined by the forum. HP and philips broke away from this due to their displeasure with the way it handled data (+rw is much more versatile)
-r has a higher compatibility with standalones. Reliability depends more upon media type.

I'll offer one final parting thought:
When it came time to install a DVD burner, my options were substantially limited due entirely upon the fact that I am running a PIII 500Mhz machine! Many said I would have to upgrade my CPU, RAM and motherboard in order to burn DVD's.
Best bottom line deal for an AthlonXP configuration checked in at approximately $300.00.
I was fortunate that ALL of my equipment could read DVD+R media. This enabled me to buy a Lite-On LDW-401s single format burner. Had my standalone, mobile laptop, or PS2 lacked that capability I would have been forced to upgrade and buy a dual format burner.
My parting suggestion:
If you already have the processing power, buy a dual format burner and burn according to your needs in the correct format!

+RW are more versitle however if there is a simplfied standard to be set +R are more reliable and cheeper
