I'm confused as to what exactly you are talking about but here goes some explaination about something hehe

DivX . Property of DivX networks. They have three versions of their codec pack
- Standard (never used to be honest, I'm pretty sure it can handle itself for encoding but I wouldnt know)
- Adware supported Pro . The complete professional version aimed towards video encoders. Normally costs money but is free because it is supported by Adware (this was the version i used)
- Full Pro . This the same as the Adware version but just without the Adware. I use this now for the few times I actually use DivX
- Summary: DivX is a type of MPEG4 codec which aims to offer very high quality for a small filesize. It is closed source (i.e., private intellectual property) and the full version is for sale .

XviD Licensing is done by the GNU Procedures (i.e., free). There are several builds of XviD available (Koepi, uManic just to name two). Being open source it is constantly under develeopment and is slightly more efficient than DivX (both in terms of speed and quality) although I think such advantages are small potatoes since it still takes a significant amount of time to reencode movies. The bad side of XviD is that (a) it doesnt have the marketing exposure as DivX (notice how many people have never heard of it nor have it installed on their computers and if they do have it installed, they either didnt intend to or dont know its there). (b) The various builds are fairly conflicting with each other (and thus its not a a good idea to have 4 installations of XviD all on one computer hehe). (c) The ever common problem with Green/Purple distorted images when watching XivD movies. This can be fixed by installling the latest FDDSHOW.

My reccommendation:
- If you want to go DivX, grab the Adware pack. This is because (a) its a decent peice of programming and support you give them furthers their cause. (Of course I havnt used it in ages and when I did use it the Adware wanst malicious, I dont know the status as of now). If you are a security freak and/or intend to do a lot of DivX encoding, consider getting the Full Professional version.
- If you want to go XviD, I would reccommend prolly the Koepi build (or whatever version comes with Nimo 8, I wrote it down at one point but cant remember the exact revision. Just make sure you also have the FDDSHOW and everything will be fine.

Praetor, the new xvid unstable build 1.0 is based on a different version of the development source code then previous versions. It is not meant for newbies and in fact was put out more to test the encoding capabilities of the new development tree and not the decoding aspects. There have already been reports of problems decoding older xvid builds in certain resolution. The good news is FFD show manages to decode it without problems from what i understand.

Right indeed FDDSHOW does work wonders. BUt it think the v version at the bottom of this page is good for newbies.
