I have an Xbox 360 about 3 years old and never opened.
Nothikng has been done to my drive, or anything.
One day I put a game in and it gave me error saying I needed to put the disc in a XBOX 360!
What makes it confusing is that I can play LOTR about 30 percent of the time.
It is the only game I can get to worik.
Whats wrong?

deffinately laser. i just had mine go a couple of months back, got a replacement MS28 of ebay, reflashed and put it back in and away it went.

if you need to buy a replacement you must make a backup of your current firmware and reflash the new drive with the firmware from your old one.

if you do not feel comfortable doing this seek advice from someone with more experience, there are a lot of people who can sort your problem for a small fee

MY 360 also did this and there is way to fix it. It has some thing to do with a pot on the dvd drive here is a video that helped me fix it the video

doing this i did fix my 360 and from this forum this is for a x box but pretty much the same and this they say it works but is way to risky dont think so if you screw it up you just buy another dvd drive. It may not fix your 360 it should but doing this it fixed mine and others. i am not trying to sound like a ass. i am just saying that me and a few others found that doing this does do something.sorry if i sound like a ass just trying to help. p.s. this a temporary fix not a life time one maybe 3 or 4 years tops so it would be best to just go ahead and buy another dvd drive if you play it a lot and if i am wrong sorry for this long ass post

This is crazy, can anyone help? I have 2 xbox 360s one for me and one for my son, both are modded with ixtreme firmware, and I have had to replace the dvd drive inside my 360 4 different times and 3 different times on my son's 360. It keeps saying unreadable disc on mine at the dashboard when I put a disc in, but on my son's it will lock up during a game and say dirty disc error, and the dvds are all verbatims and I'm burning on a pioneer 111d, and I've tried replacing the laser on the drive but I just ended up screwing it up. I've had the 2 360s for only a year but I've had to replace the dvd drive in them 7 times in all. Most recently I bought a drive for my son's 360 that was already pre-flashed, I just had to send the company my drive key and they would flash the new one. I got it back a few days ago and it worked perfectly, but yesterday I tried putting in Frontlines: Fuel of War, and it played fine until I got past the fist level, then it locked up and gave me the same dirty disc error that I had before I replaced the drive, I almost screamed, I tried it again and it did the same thing, This is ridiculous, I'm getting the RROD just days after I paid over $100.00 to get a new drive. Is this normal? I've been reading the forums for the past year and everyone just seems to say that if your dvd drive goes out just buy another one. But I can't keep paying $100.00 every couple of weeks. I wonder if there's something more than the drives, I've tried samsung/toshiba drives ms25 and ms28 and the hitachi drives and they all do the same thing after just a short time. Does anyone know what this problem may be, does anybodys elses 360s do this with the ixtreme firmware, or is it something more internal with the 360, dealing with the console? Any help would be much apprcieated, I'm paying way too much money just to be able to play my games. Thanks a lot, Mike

Oh and I haven't actually gotten any red ring of death yet, the drives just die before any red rings start flashing. Thanks again

No, when the drive quits working for my 360 games It will stop have a real hard time playing dvds, cds I haven't checked, but it quit playing my hd-dvd rips too, so I know somethings wrong with the laser, I can hear it making awful noises when it tries to read certain games. I just wonder why the laser keeps screwing up so quickly.

If the 360 breaks, just call it in as an RROD or something if it's still under the 3 year warranty. Forcing an RROD sometimes may also not be a bad idea.

But I've already opened the case, isn't the warranty voided if I open the case? Please help someone, I can't play Frontlines or Turning point now, but my older games are working fine for now but I know they will go out soon too, this happens every time I get a new drive.

Was there a warranty sticker that you cut when you opened the case? Does it look like you've opened it before?

yes, i had to take the sticker off to open the case so I could put the 3 different dvd drives in and they all failed after just a couple of weeks, I tried burning my games with DVD Decrypter instead of clone cd and I'm not sure but I havent gotten a dirty disc error like I was getting before, its only been a couple of days though, I hope this is the problem, but i'm doubtful, i'll post back in a few days.
