Hi there, I was wondering if in order to play downloaded games on my Wii if I have to install a modchip or not. Last time I did anything like that was on my original xbox, so I am not totally new to this if I have to do it. Also, I was wondering if there is anyway to get the internet channel for free.

You do need a chip. There are plenty of guides and posts on this. Also, we do not play downloaded games, we play backups of games that we already own. ;)
