Everything was working fine, turned the system off for about an hour, disc never left drive, but upon turning it back on it won't read the disc, prompts with "open tray".
Booted an original without a problem. Tried to boot a different backup, same problem comes up.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

how long have you been playing backups on the drive, and what type of media did you use to burn? could possibly be your laser in the drive going bad

some questions:
1. what brand of media did you use
2. what speed were they burned at and with what program
3. Do the discs appear to be scratched up at all, some drives will do that.
i assume it is only back up's that will not work from the above. If all of the originals games you have play fine without any error or skipping then i would say the laser is most likely fine. It could just be that you used poor quality media.

Since I started the thread, I've gotting my backup to work about 25% of the time. One time I boot the system and it won't load, next time, it boots fine.
The concern I have is that the game never left the drive after it worked the last time. I left it in the machine, and went back to play later and it wouldn't read.

Steimy:
This isn't a new flash, its been working fine for over a year now, or atleast it was, so I've largely discounted media. I've checked others that had also worked in the past and got the same result.
As for scratches, it looks great, I don't see any sign of damage from the drive, but then I never had previously.

guesswho:
I'm still leaning toward a laser myself, but the fact that my originals run without a problem throws me.

Is there any way to definitely nail down the problem as the laser? I'd rather no pull everything apart if its not going to fix the matter.

When did this start for you?
Mine suddenly started doing the same thing on the weekend. Just backups affected?

Any chance M$ managed to push some sort of firmware flash to the box?

definitely the laser needs replacing. my friend had exactly the same problem as you did, we replaced his laser last week and it runs fine now.
Your xbox will run originals as the quality of the dye in the original is of much better quality than that of a burned disc so the laser doesnt have to work as hard to read the data off it.
