Hi all

Im trying with no luck to get some footage from a mini dvd that was recorded of a mates wedding (not sure what DVD camera it was filmed on it was a family member) anyway I have borowed from another friend a DVD camera a canon DC230 in order to get the footage of and edit it for him, i can watch the footage in the camera fine, I understand that it might need to be finalized before i can even edit it on my computer....... is this correct and if so can i finalize it in the camera i borowed ?

I havent actually managed to see if it works with my editing program as it keeps telling me that the device is offline even tho its conected the computer, is this also something to do with the disk not being finalized.

Any help that anyone could give would be great as its driving me up the wall, im in New Zealand and my friend is in the UK so im trying to avoid sending the DVDs back to him to get them finalized.

Cheers

The Canon requires that the disk be finalized before transfer to the PC over the the USB, but I don't think it applies to the AV connection (to a TV or DVD recorder).
It has to be finalized in the original cam.

Photogry...it does hav to be finalized in the camcorder first, that's correct. The issue will be once you have it on your HD and what program u use to edit it with.

If the file on your HD ends up being a VIDEO_TS file with .VOB files within it, u may hav problems as some video editing programs won't allow 'drag & drop' of VOBs.

I'm in the same boat currently and am trialling a few - best so far, Pinnacle Studios.

Failing that, u cud convert the VOBs to AVI, Pinnacle especially likes AVI as it recognises all scene splits. A great thing when u want to cut out all those annoying out-of-focus bits, or places where the lens cap was left on etc.

Hope this helps, cheers...

For vob's or mpeg2, the best program to use is videoredo. It does frame accurate editing and will save the finish product without encoding. The finish video is as good as the original and get's finished in minutes.

Most video editing programs including pinacle, will reencode the video and can take hours to finish.
