I'd like to backup several of my NTSC discs for playback overseas in Europe on an extended stay. First, is this necessary, or do players generally have the capability to switch "on the fly"?

Secondly, if I must, how do I go about making such a PAL disc (R2) as a backup of an NTSC R1 disc?

As a European region user..

Make pal disks.. A lot of euro dvd players are region locked, and also you find that 60% of tv's you will encounter will only do pal. I have 3.. 1 does ntsc no problem.. one gives no colour, and the third is rolling picture and B/W..

Make life easy and do pal

Watch out for customs security checks.. they can and will confiscate anything they think is illegal.. Not likely they will class you as a pirate, but they might. Most euro countries have signed up to the DCMA so any copy of a hollywood film/tv content etc will be seen as illegal.

They may also want you to pay import duty on the disks, even though burned.. UK currently runs at 17 1/2% of whatever arbitrary value they put on them....

How do burned dvd's stand up to x-ray scanners?

Personally unless they are home movies.. friends and family etc.. I wouldn't take them across any international borders...
