Hi!

I've been using DVD Shrink for awhile, never had any problems... Recently I was giving it to a friend, and suddenly the application stopped working.

Double clicking on the exe, shortcut, anything.. produced 0 results. The task would launch for 1 microsecond, then die, instantly. Reinstalling seemed to fix this issue... so I figure it's a bad windows install, I try a totally different XP SP2 disc... same problem (works fine after install, some random time later, stops working)

I've actually reproduced this on two completely unrelated computed (except both have SP2 installed?) I'm completely at a loss as to what could be causing this (considering I don't see a very large abundance of this issue, it can't be JUST sp2, but I'm seeing it on every computer I try)

Oh! And I noticed this... whenever the application ceases to work, the filesize is 300kb~ bigger. It starts out as 550ish KB or something.. while it's operating fine it doesn't change, boom program stops working.. file size is now 786kb..

MD5sums do not match for the 'old' file vs the 'original' file. I've tried to set read only on the file, only to have the problem happen WHILE DVD-SHRINK WAS RUNNING.

Does anyone have any friggin idea what thing could be? I'm a pretty tech savvy guy, and this has me at a loss. It's not DEP, that's off.

The filesizes and the files themselves are being modified (just the exe) and I have no idea how. No long, no change date.. just a sudden change.

I'd like to note I've taken extensive time viewing the forums to see if this problem is common, here is my conclusion;

There are numerous people who have experienced this strange issue. It seems to me the majority (all?) were running SP2.

A reinstall fixes this issue for a couple minutes, sometimes a couple hours.

Every single time the application starts failing to respond to mouse click (To launch it, like it's a corrupt file, but I get no error... nothing) the filesize is changed by a fixed amount (I've actually copied a 'good' version of dvd shrink, waited for the installed exe to suddenly change, replaced the installed exe with the 'good' one, and it works again.. for a time)

Again I repeat this is on a FRESH FORMATTED INSTALL of XP SP2. There is no spyware at play here. I cannot open it in Safe Mode when the file size has been changed (no idea wtf is changing it, says changed date is in 04, wtf people)

I'd like to further back up this thread with screenshots.

You can see exactly what I mean there.

I had DVD-Shrink open the entire time, set to read only. I went to check, and what do you know.. it changed again! I've since closed DVD-Shrink and am unable to open it! Whatever is causing the file size change is definitely causing the program to not open.

Yep, the first is the original... I don't know what is going on.

This is happening to me on two machines, two difference installs of XP, the only thing that is the same is SP2... I don't understand it..

it's the most confusing thing i've ever seen in my life, hah

More information (I am posting this because there were a couple of other people with the same problem if you scroll through the forums...)

The file is increasing exactly 173KB each time. The uninstaller application also increases in size, an becomes unusable with the error message, "Messages file "C:\Program Files\DVD Shrink\unis000.msg" is missing. Please correct the problem or obtain a new copy of the program.

What
the
heck?

Solved!

So, it was a fresh install and all.... I didn't think to consider virii and their like.

Then it struke me, a couple of years ago there was this memory resident virus w32.pinfi ( http://www.symantec.com/security_respons...-011708-2030-99 )

And guess what size this little pinf was? around 176kb. Totally infected every file on my drive (How the hell did I get this after a fresh install with sp2? I didn't even download anything).

So now about 50% of my files are totally corrupt! Hurray, at least I found the culprit!

Oh, and FYI.. this little bugger isk inda nasty, considering I just formatted less than a day ago..

The Win32/Pinfi virus variants have been cleaned from the local system:

A total of 20781 files were scanned.
A total of 298 files were infected.
A total of 292 files were cleaned. (cured and/or removed)
A total of 6 files were renamed. (with .AVB extension)

A-ha. i didn't bother investigating further as you'd initially stated 'no spyware here'. Nice one :)
