Hey guys,
I am just getting into the home theater world, got a TV right after Christmas, now it is time to pick up a sound system. I have about $400 cash and $100 in circuit city gift cards to spend and was wondering if someone could give me a suggestion on getting the best bang for my buck.

To have a really sweet audio HT system, you really need to save up some more money.

Yea, just a decent receiver will run you anywhere from 450-550. Tough it out and save up some more cash.

I am not a home audio audio expert (or close to it), but i really like onkyo systems. I think they sound amazing. I also like the multiple inputs. This model takes 3 component inputs, with 1 output. And it takes 2 hdmi inputs, with 1 output. Here is the link: http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Onkyo-HT-...roductDetail.do I would go check this one out. Just my two cents.

The above mentioned HT system by Onkyo, while a class act, is one of their entry level systems. While boasting big specs, the spects do not reflect real time usage, as will the unit offer enough power ( and current for bass response ) for sustained action in a movie. Unless the amp is a high current type of greater than 30 amps per channel, bass does not come anywhere to live levels even with the non powered/ or a small powered sub woofer included in the system. To offer all that and the speakers in a 7.1 system, compromises must have been made. In the end, this system gives just a taste of what HT can offer. We end up saying after purchase is "Where's the beef?" For real HT thrill , look up JL Audio's Fathom f-113 powered subwoofer if u want to expierence sledgehammer bass ( this in addition to the rest of the quality products ). Quality HT systems cost a fair amount. If movie watching is your passion, the amount u spend will be worth it in the long run, as it will last a lifetime and offer joy on a nightly or weekly basis.

Hendrix04,
I am curious on what you decided to get, or if you are saving your money to get a better system. Please post with your decision. Your opinion could be very helpful to other members.

Well after looking around a tad more, i realized that I really need something that can take a digital HD audio format and decode it to give me good sound (only other option would be to have my hd player to decode it and run 8 analog cables to get 7.1 surround which i did not want to do). I have decided to take the plunge and get the Onkyo TX-SR605. As soon as i get my cash i am going to make the purchase and let everyone know how it is working out for me (have not decided on an exact speaker setup yet).
