so yesterday, my computer started acting up. tried system restore, but the problem came back. when trying to look at my computer, or trying to go to control panel, the window will close, and the desktop will either refresh or not display. also, internet explorer will sometimes just stop responding. have to force close it.

lets start with this:

download and run vundofix.exe:

http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4

* Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
* Click the Scan for Vundo button.
* Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
* You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
* Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
* When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
* Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

ok lets see what combofix can dig up:

Download combofix from one of these links and save it to Desktop:

http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

as a precaution, before using combofix:
Close any open windows
Close/disable anti virus and any antimalware programs that might have real time protection running.Usually this can be done by clicking on the icons by the clock and selecting exit etc. This is done to prevent any possible interference while Combofix is running. After combofix is done you can restart them.

CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

ok good. i dont see those two 04's in the new log but I wouldn't rely on a clean hjt log for proof, rather rely on your antimalware apps coming up clean like you did.
i doubt seriously you added those two entries to your host file, the alcohol-soft looks like it could be part of a crack or something to prevent checking or updating of software? in any case if you didnt add them to the host file you should have hjt fix the entries.

i'm having similar problems with my pc. sorry, i'm kind of a novice, so i don't know all the right terminology(bear with me).

i unzipped a folder overnight and got a run dll error by morning.

i restarted and ran mcafee which found nothing. i could not access windows explorer(not IE) to delete the new folder that i unzipped.

i ran spybot which found some spyware, but didn't solve the problem. i then did a system restore with msconfig.exe which seemed solve the problem...temporarily.

a few hours later, the folder reappeared. and the run dll errors.

i have another login on my pc, which is an admin, i used that, got the suspect folder into the trash and emptied it. no good.

i tried msconfig again. would not restore back more than an hour.

at some point, mcafee said that it quarantined and trashed vundo virus.

i ran vundofix. which found nothing.

i ran avira antivir. which found something. not sure how it's supposed to respond, but everytime it found something(everything was stored in c:username/appdata/localfiles/temp/) my modem would beep. after the beep, it showed what it found. this happened around 10-15 times.
afterwards i ended up with more run dll errors.

i went to msconfig again and deactivated about 4-5 (unknown)HKEY listings that run at startup. this stopped the run dll errors but changed the problem.

now when the computer boots up, along with my listed programs(where the mcafee, etc icon shows) i have the safely remove hardware icon showing.

i cannot remove the hardware. the hardware it lists is:
WDC WD32 00AAJS-22RYA SCSI Disk Device at Bus Number 0, Target Id 0, Lun 0

when i click stop or display device components, it shows it linked into generic volume-(c): and generic volume-(d):

unplugging the internet connection has no effect.

i then ran combofix and spyware blaster. spyware blaster found a lot of spyware. mostly benign, but one was porn in IE(even though i haven't looked at porn in IE). combofix found nothing.

I have no idea, but i did read a thread on afterdawn that was similar but didn't handle it all.

i first noticed this early monday morning and i've been working with this since, so i may have something out of order or forgotten.

can anybody help?

Happyfrog,

Please, do not post your questions in another person's thread. Start a new thread, give it a title, copy and paste your comments there.
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_create.cfm?forum_id=166

And while your at it. Download HijackThis version 2.0.2.
http://filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/
Open HJK. Click, Do a system scan and post a logfile. Copy and paste this log into the new thread, as well. Thanks!

Someone will respond shortly.
