Well if you have a Premium you can go out and get one of the 120 gigs from the Elite's. However there is no current way to take a normal SATA or USB HD and replace it with the stock drive.

You can hook up a USB 2.0 HD to the 360 and use it to store your actual media (movies, music, etc.) however all saved games, demos, arcade games will still have to be played off of the original hard drive.

Yep, right now we're locked down to MS's official drive. That's why they charge an arm and a leg for them.

Yes, from a Microsoft business standpoint they did a much better job "fixing" things up on this console. They have it pretty locked down which is why it has been out a few years and we still do not have one tenth of the things that you could do with the original system like:
changing the hard drive
using third part online systems (Xlink Kai, XBconnect, Leafnetworks)
Running emulators
having on board trainers
Using FTP
a great media center like XBMC
Playing games from the hard drive without having to have bought them at the XBL Marketplace

and so many others. All we can hope is the evil geniuses out there can "crack the box" some time in the future.

That's too technically involved for most, plus you still need a good key from an official MS drive.

Seeing that the drive needed cost anywhere between $60 and $100 depending where you get it, why spend the time doing all that when you can get the official 120GB for $100 at Ebay?
I could see doing it if it were more storage like 300 or 500GB, but not for the same amount i can already get.

Trust me, your not doing anything to MS. Just look at past trends with the Xbox.
switching the HDD = banned
modchip = banned
regular softmod = banned
trainers on XBL = banned

They found a way to detect every mod that people came up with and would ban your from XBL. And what would most people do? Go out and spend $100 on another Xbox. With the regular Xbox there were other decent online gaming systems so you could just say F U Xbox Live. But with the 360 you really can not do that because unless you are in just the right ping range those free systems will not work for you. So you either spend $400 on a new 360 or give up online.

i...understand

:C

so does that mean if i get banned from live then there are no third party servers i can log into and play?

Well you have about a 50/50 chance that it will work. You have to be in a certain ping range(i forget the actual numbers) and so does the person who's game you want to connect to. But you can always give Xlink Kai or XBconnect a try. And those systems only work on certain system link games so check the sites for a complete list.

The problem with the free systems is that they are not really monitored like XBL. So on Original Xbox games they will cheat using trainers and pretty much ruin any fun a real player would have. Now there are not many cheats for the 360, yet, so you may be ok unless they have found other glitches they can use. But although the systems work they are just not nearly as good as XBL because of the type of people you will end up having to play with.

Ignor the above post.
Nothing blocks MS from banning you. Just ask around. I know i have seen posts with people who used iextreme being banned.
Everyone would like to believe that they are 100% safe using this newer firmware but the truth is your not. It only help you not get caught, it doesn't prevent you from getting caught. this was just one post on 8-30-07
"How did i still get banned i unplugged my network b4 the last update and the warnings that the bans were about to happen. I updated my firmware to the latest ixtreme reconnected and i am banned. The only games i played on live were PGR and Call of Duty and they were original games. When i did reconnect i did leave my hard drive in. Is there likely to be a solution to get back on live or should i just sell the console."

and i am sure i could find many more if i cared to look. But since i already have one banned console and one stock console (for online play) i really have no more worries other then the dreaded RROD.

This is true. There is no 100% safe way to play backups on LIVE. The safest (but not guaranteed) way at the moment is to use the latest iXtreme firmware and make your own backups with a Toshiba/Samsung ts-h943a drive from a 360.

Many people use a Samsung sh-d16xx PC drive to make backups, and it works good 95% of the time. But it was proven to make occasional read errors which lead to a detectable backup by MS. This and some bad releases on the internet was the reason behind the last bannings.

oh right ok i see.. wow.
i thought the ixtreme made it invincible,
steimy, that post above mentioned that the guy was updating his xbox or something like that,
supposing i dont run updates and stuff, and i just carry on playing on live, does that make me (more) safe? or do the updates make you more vulnerable?

No, because updates to games and your console are not optional.
You have two choices, either do the update and be able to play on Xbox Live.

Or skip the update and you will be signed out of Xbox Live until you do.

So you really have no choice.

I know everyone want someone to tell them that there is a way to mod your system with no chance of being banned, but the fact is that there isn't. Whether you update from live or you update from a made CD you still have the same update on your system. So what ever it is capable of doing as far as getting you banned it will still do.

People who mod their system know the price you may have to pay, that is just how the game is played. And the only advice i can give you is the expensive way of doing it.
Have a modded console for back ups and offline play and a stock console for online where you buy just the games that you use online.
For some this is a valid option since there may only be 1-2 games that they REALLY like to play online. But for those XBL junkies who just have to play everything online there is no hope except to mod the console and ride the wave as long as it lasts.

1. Have the most up to date iXtreme firmware at all times
2. Make games yourself with the kreon flashed Samsung DVD-ROM drive to avoid bad downloads.
3. Use Xdvdmulleter (latest version) to check every ISO and make sure it is completely stealth.
4. Use only top quality media (Verbatim)

That is about all i can really think of.
