AC3 won't play properly in Media Player Classic

I've recently changed motherboards from one with the excellent nForce Soundstorm chip (the Epox 8RDA+) to one with the not-so-excellent C-Media AC97 audio processor (the Epox 8RDA3+).
I bought an official Epox SP-DIF output card for it that connects to my Denon AVR-1803 receiver so I can get Dolby Digital 5.1 sound. The receiver is set up to switch to surround mode automatically when it detects the appropriate stream.

However, when I try to play a DivX film through Media Player Classic, it fails to switch to DD 5.1 mode unless I skip backwards and forwards through the film several times for minutes at a time until it finally detects the AC3 stream. It's almost like it needs to "catch hold" of the stream. The funny thing is that my old motherboard never had this problem.

Windows Media Player 9 switches to AC3 as soon as a film is loaded, so it definately isn't a hardware problem. I've tried reinstalling several different codec packs and the AC3 filter several times over with no luck.

Please help me, as I'd rather use Media Player Classic over any other player.
