I am hoping someone here can shed a little light on something . I bought a PS3 yesterday , more for the blu-ray than the games really. I have an old Yamaha RV-990 which of course doesnt have what I need for inputs ( HDMI etc..). I was doing a lot of reading last night on some of the newer HDMI receivers and some claim to upconvert sd signals but the manuals or the specs dont really get into much of an explanation . What I was hoping to accomplish with the new receiver is an upconvert of my SD satellite signal . I am wondering if thats even possible ? As the sat ird only has S-Vid and the older composite out for video . I'm just curious what HDMI receiver will upconvert a signal that is input on either S Vid or composite . If the Sat ird had component out I probably wouldnt need to be writing this , lol
I don't believe anything can be upconverted like that, I think it has to be straight HDMI but, I could be wrong. Maybe going s-video to the receiver, then HDMI out from receiver to tv might possibly work.
Source > HDMI > Receiver > HDMI > TV, should give you an upconverted signal.
There are actually several receivers and pre/pros on the market that will do a full up conversion (1080P), from any scan rate, from any connection. An example of this is the Onkyo TX-SR875. It will convert all connections to HDMI and to whatever resolution you choose or best fits your display. These capabilities will vary from manufacture and machine.
In reference to the PS3, you will not need up conversion. You simply need HDMI pass through or run it straight to the display. As a custom home theater installer, I have found that the Onkyo TX-SR 805 is just about the best receiver that I have ever used. It is what I use in my theater. I sold my high-end NAD separates for a 805 and never looked back. However, it will not up convert. You will need to step up to the 875 for that feature.
Thanks for the fast replies . Airball ,thats true about the PS3 except if I do that then it ( audio)wont run thru the stereo . For now anyways , my Yammie 990 isnt much use for that (HD). Only way I think I will be happy is buy the component PS3 cable and run the vid to the Pan plasma and the audio into the Yammie . Get by on that till I go shopping . I'll check out the Onkyo ,thanks !!
