I have a question about subtitles too ... I've searched a lot of forums etc but I never found an answer.
The problem that I have is : I bought a DVD in America, because it was released sooner over there. Now, it's released everywhere and I have the subtitles of it in my language in a file (srt).
The thing I want to do is rip the DVD (done) and rewrite it to a DVDr WITH SUBTITLES.
So, I've got some .VOB files, and I want to add subtitles (best forced I think)to it. Then I want to write it back onto a DVD without loss of quality.
Is there a way to add subtitles to a VOB file ?
I would be pleased if I got the movie (without) extras on a DVD with the Dutch subtitles on it !
Can someone help me with this one ?

Yes you can add Subtitles to the DVD without Re-encodeing so there will be no Quality Loss But it will not be an easy or Cheap thing to do...You will need a DVD authoring Program that supports subtitles and Only the Very High end Authoring programs support Subtitles..Like "Adobe Encore DVD ($500)" or "Sonic DVD producer ($4500)" or "Sonic Scenerest($20,000)" or "Sonic ReelDVD($800)" as you Can see adding Selectable subtitles to a Movie needs fairly advanced software..It would be easier if you hard coded the Subs into the Picture but then there would be some Quality Loss......

Yeah, that too expensive just to see a movie with subtitles !
What do you think is the fastest/best way to do it then ? With the least loss of quality ? So the file can be quite big ...
Thanx in advance ...

The only other way to add subtitles is to Hard code them into the Video which will require you to re-encode the Files...I have never worked much with Subtitles Probably because I hate watching them but I know onw way to add subtitles if you have the .srt File is to use in this case "Virtual Dub-Mpeg2" with the Subtitle Plugin to Frame serve the Video with the Subtitles to a encoder Like TMPGEnc or CCE or Mainconcept encoder...then the Video will have Subtitles and you would just need to author it to DVD....You should go to VirtualDub.org/" class="korostus" target="_blank">http://www.VirtualDub.org/ and find info on useing the Subtitle Plugin...Cheers

Minion, I am a NEWBIE. Could you please explain to me step by step now to add a braned new subtitle to a dvd movie without paying that much of money? Another helper sent me this email but I don't really understand him so much but will his words help? 'You need to use SubRip to extract the subtitles (uses optical character recognition to translate the bitmap subs to text).
Subtitle workshop can read SubRip files, and you can type the chinese translation in a second column (first, try to download them from the internet - saves you a lot of time).
Save the (downloaded) subtitles with SubWS to SubRip (*.SRT) format
Use srt2sup to convert subtitles to SUPs.
Split the original DVD VOB files to separate movie/audio/subtitles (*.SUP), etc.'-----Please let me know as soon as possible and I appreciate it very much.:)

I actually can not give you a step By step Because I haven"t done it in so long that I don"t remember how and I would have to farmiliarize myself with it again which would mean I would have to have a SRT File and a Movie file to add it to which I do not...But I can point you to a few Guides that will give you most of the info you need...Check out these guides:

I think the top one is a Better one...cheers

Minion, are these two links guide to add new subtitles to DVD file movies or others? I wish to create new subtitles to my backup DVDs from my original DVD collections. Someone told me that DVDMaestro needs the hardware dongle to activate the software, what is that dongle? Where to get DVDMaestro and how much will that dongle cost? Any idea? Thanks.---Eager James

Those Guides are for adding Hard codec subs into a Video file ,They would not be selectable like in a DVD, what you need is to First Have the SRT Subtitle File and a DVD Authoring Program that supports Subtitles which means you have to get one of those expensive DVD authoring programs like "Spruce MaestroDVD" or "ReelDVD" or "Adobe EncoreDVD"ECT, these are all Expensive and or Hard to find Programs, Like MaestroDVD is an Old Program that isn"t even Made anymore and you Need to have a specific Software DVD Player installed or a specific Hardware Mpeg Decoder card for it to decode the source files so you can see a Prievew of them in the Program....The Dongle you are Talking about with MaestroDVD is a USB Device that comes with the software when you Buy it and the software will not install or Run without the Dongle installed ,This is so poeple can not Copy and Pirate the Software cuz getting a dongle is nearly impossible...You basicly have no choice but to Find one of the few DVD authoring programs that supports Subtitles cuz you can"t do it without one...And when useing an Authoring Program to add subtitles to a DVD that has allready been created you will Loose the Menu"s and Chapters and any special Features that were in the Original DVD so you have to Re-Build the DVD from Scratch exactly the way it was created which is not Easy ,Poeple actually go to school for years to learn how to do stuff like this..I personally think you are way over your head but good luck anyways...Cheers

Ok, then, how do the manufacturers create their DVD subtitles originally? Using those expensive softwares? Someone told me I can still do it by his steps : To solve your problem, DVD Shrink copies the DVD (IFO, VOB, BUP) to your HD.
You need to use SubRip to extract the subtitles (uses optical character recognition to translate the bitmap subs to text).
Split the original DVD VOB files to separate movie/audio/subtitles (*.SUP), etc. Do you think his words make sense? Among those expensive programs, which one is the cheapest and easiest to use? Ebay has one DVDMaestro on sale for only $40 but need the dongle to activate it and you say it's imposible to have that dongle nowadays right? Why is that? If so how much is that? I don't mind just having main movie with my new created especially Chinese subtitle but without the rest. Pls let me know asap, thanks!

Yes subposedly there is a way to re-author the DVD by Rewriting the IFO file useing "IFO edit" but I think it is rather difficult ,But it is worth a try...Download Ifo-Edit and Try it and let us know how it works out....
PS: Yes ,Retail DVD"s are originally Created useing a DVD authoring program Simular to ones that Have been Mentioned, Actually Sonic Scenarist is Probably the Most used Profecinal DVD authoring Program and a Good Portion of the DVD your Rent and Buy were made with it, It even has features for adding Copy protection to your Burnt DVD"s...

Yes that Guide seems like it will Work ,It seems Like a Lot of Work but most stuff like this is a Lot of Work...You want to Create a Subtitle File From Scratch??? Like you want to go from scene to scene and Translate every Word into another Language and create the Subtitles?? This seems like an Ambitious Goal..If the Problem is Just that you don"t have the Subtitle File for the Movie you have then you might be able to actually find the Subs on the Net, On ties like this one :
http://www.divxsubtitles.net/index.php or
http://www.dvd-subtitles.com/
If you want to create them From Scratch then something like the Program found here might help:
http://www.titlefactory.com/ Subtitles are Basicly Made out of TXT Files, the Problem is writeing out the Code that Makes the subtitles so It might take a LOT of Practice...Cheers

Minion, TitleFactory replied me and said it can't let me translate the subtitle for instance from Eng to Chinese. Let me get one thing straight : Normally, which software or how do people translate/create a new subtitle in other language(Chinese/Spanish for example)into SubRip format or.srt if they get the original English subtitle of 'Matrix' from the net or...do it while it's playing back, that's what I want to know badly! Only when I can create/translate a new subtitle in Chinese or other language, then I may follow whatever steps to put into a new dvd-r with the rest .VOB files. Thanks!

Generally Poeple do not Create the Subtitles them selves ,They are created By the Movie Studios when they Create the DVD..I"m sure the studios have poeple who Translate the Movie for them and then someone with the Know how Creates the Subtitle file and syncs them with the Movie...I don"t think there is a program that Actually Translates a Subtitle File from one Language to another Language cuz as you probably know translation programs are not very accurate and usually translate into Giberish so you aren"t going to be able to Just take a Subtitle File from one language and Press a Button and have a subtitle file of another Language....I know when Createing subtitles From Scratch for Adobe EncoreDVD you have to basicly Write down the Time code of were you want the Subtitle to Start and then write the Subtitle and then write the Time code of were the Subtitle will stop ,and you do this for every Line in the Movie..I"m sure SRT and other Subtitle Formats are created in a simular way but doing it this way will take quite a Long time and you have to manually Translate every Line in the Movie....You should be able to find the subtitle file for most movies in most any major language.....
