Yo, im having issues with my xbl lagging. i currently am using a linksys wrt54gs version 7 router and i have upgraded to the most recent firmaware. when i connect to live everything is fine but when i begin to play gears of war the first game is always lag free but from then on the games i can join arte limited and i have bullet lag out the A$$. first i thought i was my interent provider but my laptop which is the only cpu in my apartment works fast as hell connected wired or wireslessly.i even had my internet provider upgrade me to the faster package and my 360 is the only thing that is constantly lagging and slow.

Two things here that might be the problem. 1st did you port forward ur computer to ur xbox and 2nd is ur nat open whenever you run a network settings check.

Here are some possible things that may cause iut
1. The V7 is not on the Xbox Live compatibility list and even when the router is they usually have specific firmware listed.
For that model it lists V2 only on Xbox.com

2. it could also be that you do not have the ports open as stated above so here they are:
? UDP 88
? UDP 3074
? TCP 3074

3. it could be a firewall or antivirus program blocking the connection

4. it could be the way it was set up, If you set the connection up manually (Static) on the 360 try changing that to automatic (DHCP).

5. It could be that your router has security features, i have the WRT54GS V2 and it has Cisco security. Which means that you have to input they type of security (WAP/WEP), the security key and sometime the SSID name into your 360.

**6. you need to disable the UPnP setting on the router, this is the first thing i would try.

I know that is a lot of stuff but when you talk about networking there are so many things that can cause your connection to go wrong.
After you make changes make sure you "cycle the router connection".
Unplug the modem and router for 20 seconds
plug in the modem and let it go through it's initial set up/testing until all lights but the internet light/lan are lit that were lit when you unplugged it.
Now plug back in the router and let it go through the startup. Then test the PC connection and make sure your working there. Then test the 360.

i have tried to have those firewall ports open and the nat went from being open to strict and then moderate.i'll have to look into getting a different version of the router, does it say it on the box?I have tried both manual and automatic setups. I disabled the UpnP and that didnt help either. its weird because i have notcied if im in a game hosted by people from the UK i never lag. its not just a one time thing too about over 50 times now when im paired with a UK gamer i get no lag at all and im from Virginia(USA) so i dont get it. also i only get bullet lag, never player lag. and i normally can get about 6 round into a match before the lag comes then from then after all the games i get in Gears of war have the red bar signalling a bad connection. and when i say all i mean.

thanks for the help fellas.

Yeah, that sounds like a very weird situation. But it really could be caused by the router. But with all of that info now i am really not sure. You have the exact opposite as what it should be. You will usually have lag the further people are away from you. Like when i use to play DOA4 with my friend from the UK we would always have lag, yet other games like GOW we would not have any.
But when i play with people in the US i rarely ever get lag unless i am hosting and it is a 14 person room (Rainbow Six Vegas, my wireless cnnection just does not handle that many people real well).

And i play with people from VA all the time as there are a few in my gaming clan and i never get any lag with them (me being in NC).

You seemed to have tried about everything except another router so far. Go to Xbox.com and check out thelist of compatible routers. Some will actually say "Xbox Live Compatible" right on the box but others will not. I can tell you if you can find the V2 version of your current router it will work if you install the firmware listed on the site, because that is the router i have. I also have the Linksys wireless adapter.

But try the port forwarding first:
http://portforward.com/

Just access your setting of the router, and follow the directions. It will tell you that you have to set up a static connection which you can try if you want. But i can tell you that my router really did not need the ports forwarded and it is an older version of the same one you have.

No, i do not think they will ban you for your connection. But being on the college ISP could have a lot to do with it. They firewall all kinds of things. And since you have no control over their system you may be stuck unless there are some I.T. people there you can speak to about the issue.
I assumed from your first post that you were talking about getting lag at your home.

my mom just bought me a D-Link DGL-4300 wireless 108g router so hopefully that will help. i played gears all day up til about 5 minutes ago with no lag and then all the sudden when i finished out a game every single one of the games i searched came up with that one red bar that signifies a bad connection. shit is incredibly gay. my dowload speed is 5mbps and upload is 2 or 3 mbps. which from i understand is relatively quick. it just sucks because its an everyday issue as far as gaming so hopefully this gamin router will help me out. im sure you'll see me posting in here asking for help setting it up or fishing for more answers if this router doesnt help. she just bought it off ebays so hopefully when it gets here things will take a turn for the better side of life.

thanks for all the help ladies and gents.

I think on the college system the router may not help. Your talking about a system with any number of people using it all at once. So you can expect varried results. But you can always hope that the router was the problem and that it will fix the issue.

i see that now. Well if it is a home network, and you buy a router that is on the Xbox.com compatibility list you should not have lag if you have a good internet connection.

On a college campus with no control over the network there is no telling how you can eliminate the lag. It may just be high volumes of people getting online causing that.

Yeh i think ive got it figured out. over the last 3 days my internet has been blazing fast for xbox live from the morning til 5 then it completely goes all to hell in a handbasket and i cant play ANYTHING. so i think it is the volume of people which is pathetic to me, i mean they know the amount of people that live at a apartment complex yet they provide a internet not capable of meeting average wants/needs of the consumer. also the router im getting is on the xbox live compatible list but yet if you read any reviews of the router it says it has issues with being compatiable with xbox live. wierd. well at any rate thanks again for the help.

one more question, does the amount of signals the router can send aout affect the speed. i worded that poorly but what i mean by signals is the router i have now is a wireless 802.11 g router and the one im getting is a wireless 802.11 a,b,g. now i know that the letters are different type of signals each are compatible with but but is having more make it more capable of faster speeds? and which signal is the "best" in terms of xbox live????thanks

Didn't you say that you get internet for free? If people are getting free access and can get online to research school work i think that is really all they need to be concerned about. Now if i were paying for it i would be pissed off, but you really can't say anything when it's free.

As far as the router having the different signals makes no difference in speed.
http://cgi.ebay.com/Linksys-Wireless-4-P...1QQcmdZViewItem
there is a compatible router for sure.

and here is an adapter
http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll...ge=search&fgtp=

here are the rest of that routers versions
http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll...54GS&category0=

that router and adapter is exactly what i have and have used since my original Xbox and i know 100% that it works with both of them. If you want to be 100% sure get version 2 of both and then get the firmware they list on Xbox.com for it.
