Hey guys; I'm totally new to the ps2 modding scene, but not modding in general. I have a soft and chipped xbox so I know how things work for the most part.

I'm looking into modding my ps2 slim so I can play backups (of games that I own, of course). No really, I have a couple classics like Star Wars Dark Forces and Masters of Teras Kasi (don't hate), and they're starting to get scratched so I want to preserve them.

I'm having an absolute devil of a time finding a "the" modchip for the ps2 these days. I have read around a lot, and at first I thought it was the messiah, but it appears that is very outdated. Then I thought it was the DMS4, but it was reportedly discontinued. So I am at a loss here: what is the hot chip on the market these days?

If you could post recommendations based on my ps2 specs I would be very grateful. I have a PS2(or PS-two, not sure what determines that) Slim, and it is a SCPH-77001.

I just want to hear what everyone currently active in the ps2 modding scene thinks that "the" chip is right now for a ps2 slim scph-77001

Thanks!

lukee mod chips are un-needed on ps2

soft-modding a ps2 is easier and safer, and best of all its quick
http://forums.livingwithstyle.com/showthread.php?t=268773
softmods are easily updated and dont require you to open your console!!
softmods = FREE SWEEETNESS

softmods are a software modification,

Soft modding implies hdloader, correct? I was under the assumption that hdloader had some compatibility issues, or has this changed over time? That's why I thought that chipping a ps2 would be more effective -- to avoid compatibility issues with backups.

Thanks for the quick reply, btw.

Thanks for the support tripplite. I read the entire guide and understand that the hdd is optional now that you pointed that out.

My only other question is that after I exploit the ps2, does that permanently hack the software so that I can just pop a backed up game in anytime I want or do I have to do follow some additional steps each time I want to play a backed up game? (assuming I'm not using a hdd).

nope you just have to burn the back up and pop it in as easy as that, the links tell you how to burn the games you just gotta follow the rules there but otherwise it is easy to burn then you jusst pop the game in and instant gaming!!!!

Very nice tripplite -- you are very helpful and courteous to members less knowledgeable than yourself. Thanks! When I can get the equipment together (such as the action replay and whatnot) I will give it a shot!

i would SUGGEST TO GET it from this guy he has a very good policy and usually nobody has issues with him, ebay is very secure

Thanks bro you are truly the man for helping me out with all of this. I will def check into shark loader since you recommended it so highly.

Since you asked, I do have another question. After you soft mod I assume you launch programs off your mem card, correct? So for example if I had a few emu's on my mem card but I wanted a different one, I can change stuff out whenever I want to, right?

yea you can why not and the emulators go on mem stick or some run of the hdd, i think some emulators can even be run of cd's (pointless though)
ps2 games (backups) are burnt on to cds remember that
im not the best with emulators though as i only play backups
ask you emu questions here
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/153402

also the best mod-chip (if you go for that option) would be
http://www.easybuy2000.com/store/playstation%20II/messiah2.shtml
just thought i'd give you another path to take if you want

see man am going to sleep *YAWN* if you want leave a comment i'll get to it before mid day tomorrow (unless some one else answers it for me)
peace

Thanks man I'm gonna hit the sack too; just got done playing some halo 3 for the night and I'm super tired. So unfortunately I have to also fit roms onto my mem card as well, if I don't have a hdd, right? From what I hear the ps2 slims can't have hdd capability without a little extra work -- I have to search around for that info as I haven't even begun to look into that yet.

Well I dunno man soft modding is easy like you say and would apparently work fine for backups -- it's also very little cost whereas a modchip is 40-50 bucks or more. Although mod chips have more flexibility it isn't really necessary for just playing backups and emus. I just need to figure out a solution as to where to put all my roms.

As a side note, do you have an hdd? If so, can you run .elf's from your hdd? (Like emu's and other homebrew software and the like) so that you don't even have to mess with your mem card?

Ok so I was doing some research and came across this: http://www.hdadvance.com/usb_extreme_whatis.htm
From what I am reading it says "no modification to your ps2", just format a hdd of your choice, install some software, connect it to your ps2 via usb, then when you boot the ps2 up you can run games that you stored on the hdd. Am I missing something? Or did they leave out the part where you have to either chip or soft mod your ps2 first??

Well I just saw that and thought it was kinda strange, but it looks like it could be a viable option for hdd capability. What would you suggest?

luke that is also another great softmod for the ps2
its very popular on afterdawn,
Quote:
Here is a list of THINGS YOU NEED
-An External USB HDD or a Internal HDD with an External USB Enclosure(like this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817145314) *Can be found on ebay for cheaper!*
-A way of booting cd-rs on your ps2. This can be SWAP MAGIC V3.6 discs or a mod chip. Swap magic is the cheaper way to do this and you don't void your warranty. (Swap Magic MUST be v3.6 is you have an older version you can download v3.6 and boot it with the version you have)
-USB Extreme or USB Advance
USB advance is free and it can be downloaded here http://www.sksapps.com/hd/USBAdvance1.Cracked.rar.
USB Extreme does not require a modchip or swap magic but it costs money and can be bought from here http://www.modmonster.com/index.asp?Page...OD&ProdID=12... (I suggest buying swap magic v3.6 as it can be used for more purposes and it is cheaper)
-The tool USB EXTREME (http://www.ps2nfo.com/USBExtreme_wininst.zip) or http://www.ps2nfo.com/usbfaq.html

here is the guide
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/250563

i'll be honest these are the only two softmods i've done, there must be about 8-15 softmods for the psp, these two are most popular here and dcemu.com along with many other communities

THE ONLY DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO IS THAT WITH THIS NEW SOFT-MOD YOU RUN THE GAMES OFF THE HDD, there are a FEW less titles that are supported with the USB EXTREME/ USB ADVANCE hack but it's only like 10 or 20 less and im pretty sure there crappy games! also if you dont have an external hd (NOT usb flash stick) then the USB EXTREME mod is out of the question for you

luke just be careful of running into crappy mods like
http://www.smashsworld.com/2005/01/easil...inutes-with.php
this one is extremely pointless, but your smart enough to know a good mod from a crap mod....right?

morning i too was gaming a bit last night!;P

Well isn't usbextreme (aka playing games off a hdd) something I could do at any point in time after I used the cogswap exploit that you linked me to?

What I mean is that the usb extreme method requires swap magic or some way to play cdrs -- can't you just exploit your ps2 first with a memory card (action replay/gameshark title.db method) and then you would be able to use usb extreme?

If I exploit my ps2 I should have the option of adding a hdd at any time after I exploit it since I could then run cdr-s.

Ok, I checked out that ebay listing of the Gameshark Sharkport, and look what I read:

"Please note
The Sharkport will work for all playstation 2 systems made up to march of 2003 Playstation 2 system model #'s 30001-35001 Only .They will not work for systems made after march of 2003 "

I bought my ps2 like last year and as I mentioned above the model # is SCHP-77001 so what options do I have now? I think I have either a v15 or v16 ps2... So that means I can't use Sharkport?

Yeah, it's a slim: SCPH-77001. According to the link you posted, mine is a v15a.

Let me get this straight: The exploit is not a one-time process: in other words, it doesn't flash the ps2 or actually change any software, it just allows .elfs to boot from the memory card.

So that means that I need to keep that same ps1 disk in my ps2 every time I want to boot .elfs off of my mem card?

Thanks tripplite for all the help; I've come to the realization that I'm relatively screwed as far as exploiting goes. I can't even use an internal hdd since mine is above v13. That means my only options are backups and running games off a usb hdd, and I hear that the compatibility is horrible.

With that in mind, I have but 2 more questions (for now):

1. Can I save run roms off of a usb thumbdrive or hard drive?

2. When burning backups, how do you know if a game is "cd media" or "dvd media"? In other words, how do you know which games to burn to cd-r's as opposed to dvd-r's?

yup as long as its a supported external hardrive (almost always from what i understand)

if your taking about ps2 emulator for pc then ya, i dont think any ps2 emulator for pc supports playing the backups of a disc, only a hard drive, or at least they wont play the backups of a unless you provide it with a path, and it's burnt...

if the game file goes over 700mb then it is burnt to a dvd-r, if it's 700mb or under then its' burnt to cd-r BUT the uploader's of the games always tell you what media it must be burnt to!

Nice set. Yeah I sent it to you in a pm should be there. The reason I ask about your tv is because I've got a 50 in. samsung plasma 720p and playing ps2 on it looks absolutely horrible. Even though I play in the correct aspect ratio it still looks really muddy and whatnot. It kinda sucks; I was even thinking about bringing my old 27inch RCA back in here just to play oldschool systems on.

Hey maybe you guys can help me out here.

I've been reading about the softmods that you liked and they seem like an excellent idea.

I have a PS2 (Fat) and according to that website, I have a V7 model with the 39001.

So here is my question, Will the original method posted here from http://forums.livingwithstyle.com/showthread.php?t=268773 actually work with my model if I get myself a Action Replay Max? I think my friend actually has one of those laying around, but If i cant borrow one I will probably buy one.

How does the action replay max work with this method (how do I get it to the mem card)? And are there any other kinds of AR Maxs that differentiate between the versions?

I'm guessing that sharkport automatically hooks the memory card up to the comp and transfers it there, but I don't know if the sharkport works with my model.

So, without a network adapter and HDD, I would have to use the cogswap method, which that tutorial sets me up for right?

Thank you! I will probably have more questions soon.

BTW, does anyone know if the HDD thing can be used if I have a portable External Hard drive. I don't have a network adapter, but is it possible to plug in the front usb port and run it off there?
