I have the most recent version of SimpleDivX and I loved the options but could not get it to encode using XVID. That was unfortunate since it was the codec I'm most interested in. I went to their forum to find not only could I not register and login, but the last post there seems to be from March 07. The problem I described was documented way back in 06 and is obviously not fixed.
So what's going on with SimpleDivX? Is it dead? Are there additional codecs I can add? If so from where? In one of the guides it shows DivX Pro 5 but that's clearly not the default.
If not SimpleDivX.... then what other capable DivX/XVID tools are there out there? I have WinAVI but the config options are pretty lame.
If you have Winavi, download the Divx/Xvid codec, and in "Advanced", choose Divx/Xvid as encoder. Then you can set the encoding options the way you like, I think you will have more than just "lame" settings:~)!
Thanks for responding. I downloaded the latest DIVXcodec and like the last one, I don't seem to have those options. I only have the Convertoer and the EKG... plus the player etc. WinAVI doesn't have any advanced settings I can find even though the info section says there should be one.
But getting back to my first question, what's happened to SimpleDIVX? Not that I think I can use it. My first file I encoded with DIVX had a 1/2 sec audio synch problem which turned into an 8 second delay using the Philips DVP3140 player. And some XVID files I downloaded from the web have too many artifacts. So it looks like I won't be using XVID to encode.

I would not blame that on the codec. I never had any problems with Xvid encoded videos.
As for what happened with SimpleDivX...I don't know, I guess it just stopped being updated. It happens with free software.
I know Winavi is not the best. There are other free software to convert to avi, like AlltoAvi , Staxrip , FairUse Wizard, AutoGK . However, some do not give you much control over the outpu(size, bitrate...), some don't support subtitles. Winavi will do that, and it can work pretty good. If you're lucky:~)!

I'm no longer sure they are XVID files. They were labeled as such but when I play them they have the DIVX logo. All I know is they didn't play well on the PhilipsDIVX player.

I have Vista. When it comes to anything running well these days I'm not that lucky. I could not get WinAVI to use the DIVX codec. It either stayed at 0% done with no sign of CPU activity in task manager... or the advanced options window would not popup. Time to start looking for something else.
