I use Smartripper 2.41 to extract. Dvd2Avi to get my .d2v project file. Then tmpgenc to get my , almost dvd quality movie, mpeg-2 file. I burn the movie with Sonic Mydvd. The video quality is good but scenes that have lots of depth are compromised. I'm looking for a solution or a better process. Thanks

If there was a god I would thank him for afterdawn.com Thanks, xxx

Hiya a1bb1a,

I assume you want just the film, no extras, one audio track & no subtitles in the best possible quality, on a DVD that will autorun on a standalone player....

You will need the following:

Ripping: SmartRipper
Pre-processing: IFOEdit
Compression: DVD2One
Burning: Use your favourite (mine is Prassi PrimoDVD, the best I have tried, brill for DVD)
LOTS of disk space: minimum is set by the film you are ripping, maximum will not exceed 28.5 GB (3 times the capacity of a DVD-9 disk), worst case I have seen has been 19 GB (7.5 first rip, 6.5 second stage, 4.4 final stage) - NOTE: NTFS is RECOMMENDED.

Basic instructions:

1 - create the following directories:
dir1
dir2
dir3

2 - rip vobs only into dir1

3 - if vobs are NOT in the form VTS_01_x.VOB, then rename them (MUST be _01_ )

4 - use IFOEdit, "Create IFOs", select first vob in set (in dir1) & wait till done (takes some time, be patient)

5 - in the top half of the window, highlight the VTS_01_1.IFO entry

6 - in the bottom half of the window you will see the structure of the film (video, audio & subtitles followed by the program chain data)

7 - "VOB extras", you need the following selected:
strip streams
correct vob-unit
correct original IFO files
create new IFO files
remove P-UOps
remove macrovision
adjust vob-unit pointers
adjust audio/subp point
ALL OTHERS UN-SELECTED
set VOB size == 1GB
set destination directory to dir2, "OK".

8 - keep audio 1, clear everything else, "strip it", wait till done.

9 - "Get VTS sectors", close IFOEdit.

9 - if the result is small enough to go on a DVD, then rename dir2 to VIDEO_TS, then test on pc & burn.

10 - use DVD2One, source is dir2, destination is dir3, wait till done, close DVD2One

11 - rename dir 3 to VIDEO_TS, then test on pc & burn.

There are LOTS of other ways to achieve the same result (some of the one-click-tools for example) but this method gives a basic grounding & good results (compare with a film done via your method).

have Fun...

For movie only it's hard to beat the simplicity and video quality of InstantCopy 8. Rip all movies files with DVD Decrypter, choose movie only with InstantCopy. Done.

Accept that TMPGEnc Is a Much Better Quality encoder than DVD2One could ever be so the Quality you got useing TMPGEnc to back up a DVD will Be Better than the Quality useing DVD2One(Unless you used some wierd settings in tmpgenc)..I personally use a simular method But I use CinemaCraft encoder and I have gotten 2 90 minute Movies on a DVD with Better Quality than DVD2One did with Just one of these Movies on a DVD-R......

P-4 2.6ghz (Overclocked to 3.2ghz)

Minion,

those of us In-The-Know(tm) already accept that TMPGEnc will give much better quality.

But if you look you will see that he is authoring & burning with Sonic MyDVD which screws up quality (it demultiplexes, re-encodes the MPEG then multiplexes again before burning!!! It is designed for beginners)

The method I proposed is a great improvement on quality, keeps chapter points and maximises space usage.

It is suitable for the "next step" for a Sonic MyDVD level of user (no disrespect intended to a1bb1a)

If further quality improvements are needed, then the TMPGEnc / Authoring route is available with a consequently higher level of user commitment towards learning and involvement (it can be a frustratingly rocky path, and time consuming to learn).

Hope this helps...

I fond DVD Shrink both very easy to use and the rusults are excellent. Plus it does not take an age to backup and re burn a DVD.

I use Nero to burn because its the best thing for the job (however you do have to buy it).
