Hey guys,
I'm pretty new at the whole modding thing, and I've read a lot of the posts about this topic, but I just had a few questions before I went ahead and bought all the materials.

I was planning on getting a Flip Top cover for a slim ps2, as from everything I've read it seems like a good non-intrusive way to go. However, recently I came across something called "Magic Switch Pro", which basically looked like little plastic things to modify the PS2 in such a way that it did the exact thing as a Flip Top cover. The reason why I was considering this option was because I read somewhere that Flip Top's are bad for the laser, which seems totally viable. I am looking for a solution that will not damage a PS2 too much.

Now, unfortunately, I couldn't find much information about the Magic Switch, such as how they work/ why they work. So here are a couple questions:

1) Which is better (in your opinion), a Flip Top or Magic Tools?
2) How do Magic Tools work? In other words, how does swapping work with these?
3) Are there any pros or cons to either (tied to question 1)?

I appreciate any and all replies :)

I used the tape and tissue method with my swap magic discs. Very simple. Don't know much about magic switch pro. I'd like to think that I used the easy way. Search around for what you want and then read and make a decision. good luck.

Hey, thanks for the quick reply. The tape and tissue method does sound tempting; it sounds almost exactly like the magic switch except for the fact that its free.

But anyway, I did some more reading on the magic switch, and it seems that the CD tray must be open unless you tape over some sensor inside the PS2 - I assume this is the sensor used for the method you're talking about. So that being true, the tape and tissue method would be a good alt, as it accomplishes the same goal. I also read that magic tool E or something is difficult to place due to an upgrade by Sony by placing a metal cover over some hole, but I have heard of it being done still. Some more questions then come:

1) Can a flip top damage your PS2 (Specifically the laser)?
2) Do the Magic Tools found at http://www.modchip.ca/ work to mod a PS2 found in regular stores, and is there any detriment in doing so? [I ask this because I read that there was a new version the the Magic Tools out, except the only reliable modding store I've read about so far is http://www.modchip.ca/, so I cant get the new version because they don't sell it]

I still appreciate some feedback on the original questions as well :)

But as far as that goes, have you had any problems with your PS2 since the tape and tissue mod?

I haven't had any problems yet and still not holding my breath. I'll also do some reading on the magic switch option that you are thinking about and get back to you - can't do any reading right now.

I don't know if a flip top can do any damage - never used one before and I don't plan to. I just took the top off of my fat ps2 v7. Works fine if I may add.

Hmm, thanks for the reply. I just have a couple last minute questions before I order the disks.

1) Do you live in the states and did you order internationally? I just don't want any trouble with customs or anything

2) If not, how did you buy your swap disks?

Thanks for your time :)

Nope. I don't live in the states. I live in the Jamaica (in the Caribbean) so i asked someone to buy them for me. They bought them off of amazon.com, when they returned I payed them. It's just two discs so they can carry them as personal items. No sweat.

Where do you live?

I live in the states, so I'm having a lot of trouble trusting international sites at the moment ... I also want to make sure that if I order something, I can actually get it without any problems.

Anyone else know if it is safe to order from Canada -> USA?

Here's an idea: check a local games store, ask them to order it for you (that's if they don't have it on sale) and then pay them when you get em. This can be done in Jamaica where i live. Try it.

Hey guys, its been awhile, but I thought I should make a follow up on this thread considering I was the one who started it.

So here's what I've learned (and feel free to comment if I'm incorrect in any of this) :

Magic Keys:
These guys are pretty nice if you're afraid to mess around with your PS2. I've heard a lot of success stories with them, which lead me to believe that they are a good option. They basically work by blocking the 3 sensors of the Slim PS2

Pros:
Cheap and easy way to modify your PS2 without opening it up

Cons:
There are mixed feelings about Tool E; some say that if you follow the famous video, everything should fit perfectly; however, I have also read that there have been cases where people have trouble in keeping Tool E in place - meaning that when they would close the case, the tool would pop out. I guess if you're feeling lucky, you can go with this option

Flip Top:
I chose to go this route because I didn't want to mess with tiny parts and I thought it would be aesthetically pleasing. This replacement lid automatically blocks all the sensors for you, thus making it also a good option

Pros:
If you're OCD like me, and want everything to look nice, this is a good way to go

Cons:
I've read some cases where the case was put on too tight or too loose, in which the disk would no longer spin or make a lot of noise, and also there is the con of voiding your warranty (on the newer models)

I haven't read too much about the "Tape and Tissue" Method, but, as you might have already read in this thread, it doesn't seem like a bad route to go either (although you have to open up your PS2, like the flip top)

Buying:
As far as where to buy the necessary materials, I now know of two good places:

If you live in Canada: http://www.modchip.ca/
If you live in US: http://www.gamesystemrepairguides.com/

I don't have personal experience with Modchip.ca, however customer service with Game System Repair Guides was amazing, and delivery was prompt (took about 2 weeks only because I special ordered)

Now, I haven't tested out everything yet, but I'll be sure to keep you guys updated. Thanks for all the help (especially ilcmdme, the only responder to this thread :) )

EDIT [03/28/08]: Installed the flip top, backed up a couple games, and everything works like a charm (except for the fact that you have to make sure the games burn well, or you'll be sitting on top of a pile of coasters)

I did the tape and tissue method, it didn't take long, yes you have to open up your ps2 but i didn't mind - i'd say it was quick and easy.

I was actually looking at those. Isn't that just a normal memory card that plugs into the PS2 Memory card slot? Is there a way you can do this with a normal memory card?

I had best luck with the slim by just cracking the puppy open and putting hot glue on the front and rear sensor. You gotta hold it still for a few second until it cools but it works like a charm. I shoved a piece of cardboard in the middle sensor to keep it out of the way.

Whatever you do DON'T USE SUPERGLUE. I did that on my first mod. What a disaster, lol.
