Using .VOB files for DVD-R ???

I made tons of VOB files with CladDVD so I could make VCDs. Now I have a Pioneer DVD-R and want to use the VOB files to make DVDs. What is the recommended course of action (software I should use, formats, etc)? I'd like to put only 1 movie on each blank DVD-R for the best quality (VCD video just didn't impress me). Thanks...

If you also have the rest of the stuff left -- IFOs, etc, you can use IFOEdit to create 1:1 copies of your movies. IFOEdit can be found from our site and IFOEdit's homepage has tons of guides.

I am using DVD2AVI along with TMPGENC which will first convert VOB files to DVD compliance mpeg2 file , once you have mpeg2 file on your HD, I use recordnow max to author the menu and burn the rest, it works every time. I am using the pioneer A03, which I was able to burn it on to the DVD RW , you can do it over and over until you are happy with it, then I just copy it onto DVD R and put it away, so far I was able to play them on all of my settop. I am very excited about it. In my opinion, ifoedit is not a very easy program to master. I am losing half a night of sleep for weeks and none of my DVD-RW is working on my settop, the badboy stopped death cold on the settop. But the above combination DVD2AVI/TMPGENC/RECORD NOW MAX, work every single time. If you need detail step by step, I will be glad to share it with you.

docchak: True, your method works, but the re-encoding process takes helluva lot of time and weakens the quality -- if you master IFOEdit, you can do it quickly and the video will be exactly the same as it was on DVD.

Most DVD nowadays contains more than 4.3 GB of data, then, you will need to split or down grade the bit rate, that takes a lot of both time and money, I might as well go out and buy the original DVD. I am encoding it on a 1.7 MHZ P4 512 MB ram sony VIAO using the slow(high quality) it takes 8 Hrs on average, the quality is very decent, much better than DIVX, and played perfectly everytime on the settop.
It is true that I will miss all the subtitle, extra features, of course, I could do all that but does it worth the trouble ?
I am very frustating about the so called "guide " to transfer a DVD to DVD-R , I probably went through about 4- 5 of them, there is always a trap here and there that was not quite exactly what it was meant to be, I wind up with worthless precious hours of sleep and gain plenty of useless discs, that is not a pretty part of it, I am not giving up searching for the correct guide though. I wish we could come up with a precise guide such as how to encode a DIVX for which no one ever have problem with that. Do you have the link to the guide that you would recommend? I do not want to mention the guide that I have already tried (I care about people's feeling :-))?

I am brand new at this and i have dvd music videos. I would like to take videos from several dvds and put the ones i like on one dvd. Does anyone know how i can do this? I used Easy dvd ripper to rip them to my hard drive and each of the dvds have about 50 .vob files. I put the ones i wanted on a dvdr but can only play them on the computer and only one file at a time.

You could compile any vob file so it could play on your settop.
You need to put all the vob file in the same folder. Then use ifoedit to create .ifo file.
You will need to rename the file eg. vts_0_1
vts_0_2, vts_0_3 etc.
then create the ifo file using the ifoedit. Just before burning the DVD click "get vts" on all the .ifo files.
Please refer to "How to create the .ifo file from vob" on the official site of ifoedit.
Catch!!! when it instruct you to save VTS_TS do not click "save" button, the moment you proceed with "get vts" you already save the file , if you hit save again it will render your burn DVD unplayable on the desk top.

: How to create DVD-R/RW from VOB:
Let¡¦s assume that you no longer have any IFO files on your collection all you have are.VOBs files.
You should stay away from windows XP, it never work for me
Now, the idea is to create the VIDEO_TS.IFO and VTS_01_0.IFO
1. let¡¦s just keep it simple by working on just one VOB: VTS_02_1.VOB (notice I intentionally select the VTS_02_1.VOB in real life it could be VTS-0x_y.VOB , where x and y are variables, correct?)
2. let¡¦s create a folder called ¡§TEST¡¨
3. move VTS_02_1.VOB to folder ¡§TEST¡¨
4. Start IFOEDIT, and press the button¡¨ Create IFO¡¨
5. You will be asked which VOB file you want to create VIDEO_TS.IFO, in this case navigate to TEST>VTS_O2_1.VOB that we created in step 1-3.
6. You will be asked what directory you will want the VIDEO_TS.IFO to be created in this case it will be in the Folder ¡§TEST¡¨ then save the VIDEO_TS.IFO
7. IFOEDIT will now scan and collects the IFO information and then will create 2 files VIDEO_TS.IFO and VTS_01_0.IFO
8. Here is the catch that most guide left out, in step 7 IFOEDIT will create VTS_01.0.IFO that means it will look for VTS_01.VOB to play back the video file, therefore you must rename your VTS_02_1.VOB to VTS_01_1.VOB.
9. Click DVD play button to make sure that playback is OK. You may need to ignore the warning that ¡§video title not found¡¨ that¡¦s another catch.
10. If it plays OK, and you want your DVD-R/RW to be played on the set top, you must again close and restart IFOEDIT open VIDEO_TS.IFO and click on ¡§GET VTS SECTOR¡¨ and follow the suggestion until finish repeat this step with all IFO files in this directory.
11. Here is another catch that most guide left out!!! They instructed you to save the VIDEO_TS.IFO, NOooooooooooo please don¡¦t hit the save button, doing so will render your video unplayable altogether. IT WAS ALREADY SAVE THE MOMENT YOU HIT GET VTS SECTOR. So, do not hit the save button
12. Now all you need to do is to burn your DVD-R/RW using your favorite DVD burning software. I tried Record Now Max and Nero , I prefer Nero, here is another catch you must use the most current Nero to do the job. And you must use the DVD-UDF/ISO and uncheck the Joliet option i.e. the last option on the wizard. You can download the full function of Nero and try it for free I believe for 14 days??
13. By the way you must burn the above files in to folder name VIDEO_TS, you may want to create another folder AUDIO_TS although, this is not necessary.

15. Come back here if you have problem I would like to share the fun after hours of effort on this matter, it is a way to relief some pain and agony. I found out that it is true that if you create the MPEG2 files from the VOB using TMPGENC is a lengthy process and yield lower quality video, not only that the audio will go out of sync toward the end. The above method is far more superior.
In real life, you probably will have .vob files of about 4 GB split down to about 1 GB each just make sure that they are put in the same folder.

Thanks docchak, I finally got a good burn, had a few little problems with a slight pause between chapters, and that wouldnt be a problem at all except some videos start with one chapter and then go into the next chapter or one chapter is the intro to the video and the next is the actual video, i used vob edit to join the chapters back into larger vobs and still had the same problem but im getting much closer thanks to you.

What is the size of your .vob file after vobedit? The file size is not supposed to be larger than .99 GB.

three were 1048 meg it was the default for it and the 4th was about 700 meg.

When I click on "Create IFO" and select my VOB the program just sits there and does nothing. I tried this on two different computers with two copies of ifoedit. Any ideas? (just it just sit there for a long time before working???)

Are you saying it's possible to use IFOEdit for re-encoding? I've already used it to strip everything except the video and 1 audio. It's still over 4.36GB. What next?

The initial renaming is where I was messing up. Ok, so I renamed all 5 of my VOBs and clicked on "create ifo" for the first VOB. It spent a long time looking at ALL FIVE of the VOBs and then spit out two IFOs (vts... and video_ts) and two BUPs (vts... and video_ts). Am I supposed to run it again on the next VOB file or did it take care of the entire movie by itself? I would have thought I needed an IFO for each of my VOB files. If I run it again it will overwrite the video_ts files???

If it is over 4.3 GB we need to use ReMPEG2 to reencode it, I have had a hang of it now and begins to love this thing. I was able to reencode the Matrix, Princess Mononoke , both around 8 GB down to a very nice 4.3 GB one DVD-RW and luv it.

The above example deals with one VOB file. I'm trying to make a compilation dvd of video trailers. I currently have about 30 VOB files that I would like to make a nice trailer dvd out of. I don't have any IFO files. I figured out how to make one using the example above, but do I need to make an IFO file for every VOB file I have? If thats the case, should I put each one in it's own directory so they do not get confused with one another?

Following docchak's suggestions in this thread, I was able to burn a DVD+R with several music video clips. Plays fine on my PC but in my Apex 1500 DVD player, I get the video but not the audio on several selections. Is it because the audio in some of the original clips were PCM and in others were AC3?

If you want to have a DVD quality then I would use VOBEdit to join all those vob files and then I use IfoEdit to create VIDEO_TS.IFO and I get vts sectors then I use Nero to burn...

Thanks docchak for great instructions on 24 August. I've followed what you suggested and got an almost working burn. Everything works fine except that the search/skip forward does not work past Chpater 6 -- neither on WinDVD nor on the settop DVD player. This has happened on multiple burns. Any ideas on how I can fix this?
