The movies i have on my PC are in widescreen but when i put the movies onto my PSP the black parts that would normally be at the top and bottom of the screen are now at the sides. Yes - dead easy. Click Triangle to bring up the menu, and select differing views until you get the one you want.

Depending on what 3gp converter you use, often they can be pre selected for screen size.
