According to the NPD Group, year-over-years sales for the US videogame market fell 6 percent to $1.18 billion USD for January 2008.
Software sales for the month increased 11 percent however, to $610.6 million USD, but NPD's Anita Frazier attributed that increase mainly to higher prices, such as the expensive "Guitar Hero" and "Rock Band" bundles that both sold very well.

No great surprises then. Wii is a 'fad' that is starting to slow down.
PS3 is the next Gen Console to watch.
PS2 - not sure why its so popular - probably the price drop.
360 - great console, but 'yesterdays' technology.
My thoughts are non bias, no fan of any console before I get slagged off.
Thanks

Firstly, congratulations to Sony for jumping back into the game with the PlayStation 3, now we can have a war of prices and mouthwatering offers to consumers ;-)
The overall drop in hardware sales had to be expected though, last January people were flocking to get their hands on any Wii they could and the PS3 had just launched a couple of months before as well. This year, none of the consoles were new and guess what, people don't have money to spend on games consoles after Christmas ;-)
Sony really made some very strategic decisions when it comes to cutting prices and the newer models, and I think they will have a very good 2008 H1 (not fiscal) because a lot of gamers who avoided the PS3 either because of the price or a once poor line-up of games now will be more interested in getting their hands on one.
It will be interesting to see how it goes from here on out :-)

I don't think Wii is going to crash for a long time and I think the company behind it is very smart with its marketing decisions, which of the other two consoles expanded the genre so widely? If Wii has any problems, for me at least, it's the low number of third-party game titles that I have perceived for the console.
I don't think Xbox 360 is yesterday's technology either, I actually find that a bit of a strange term. Sure the PS3 has Cell, but developing for Cell is not exactly the world's easiest task. RSX and Xenos both have their selling points too, but from what I've been reading for the past couple of years, Microsoft, being a giant in development, has provided game studios with a much easier platform to create stunning looking games on. That's really the focus isn't it? It's the games and for games, both are comparable.. and thats the best compliment either console deserves, least in my opinion!

The Wii will have lasting power as long as people still have standard def televisions. It could be a couple more years (maybe even more) before 30" and larger telvisions take over. The decrease in sales could be that the economy blows. Let's see what happens when US households get their "gift" rebate in June. Will people go out an buy a Wii, or get that HDTV with a 360 or PS3 they've been thinking of for the past year.

I fail to see how the Wii can be compared against the PS3 or the 360 in the same context. The target audiences are way different. The Wii's main appeal is not to the hardcore gamers that the next-gen consoles are aiming for, but to those people who for whatever reason may not have opted for any form of console in the past. It's the interface that sells the Wii and not the capabilities. So really, the types of TVs that people own will probably not affect the types of consoles that they buy.
What's really held back the next-gen sales will undoubtedly have been the prices. With the 360 being the first console out, MS would have been able to drop the prices quite early on, since they had a fairly good run with no real competition. The high price of the PS3 on its release meant that it's initial uptake was rather slow. However, now that Sony too have been able to lower the prices, sales are picking up.
Of course, I'm sure that price isn't the only decider. The gaming experience, the way the product is marketed and yes, even the graphical quality and abilities are all factors too. Rest assured however, that the 360 and especially the PS3 will most likely have their year this year, as the prices come down enough to bring the rest of the gaming public into the fold.

Wii can only compared to PS2.
There is no way that Wii can be compared with PS3 or 360 is like comparing a Yugo with Buggati Veyron.
2008 and 2009 will be very good years for PS3 for the reasons that already have been said plus blu-ray win will play its role too, like DVD did with PS2.
I believe that M$ will be forced to release another version of 360 if things go really good for PS3.

Yeah, I think it'll be quite intersting to see how much further MS proceed with HD-DVD backing, thanks to recent events. I think that any future use for next-gen media on the 360 will have to be questioned, now that some of the larger retailers seem to be heading towards Blu-Ray.

It's good to see the PS3 is finally starting to come into its prime. 2007 was a great year for X360 and 2008 should be PS3's year to shine. The Wii - the only of the three that I don't own - is of course out in front early. It'll be interesting to see if it can stay there. I'm waiting to see what MS answer is to the failing HD-DVD. Will they go Blu-Ray?

The WII is still the king of the 7th generation, its going to take the PS3 5 years of solid sales to match the profits they made in the first year.
I still hate the PS3 as its currently priced and configured take 100$ off the 80GB model and 150 off the crappy 40GB model and it will be a better deal the 360 is also over priced by 100$.
The PS3 is going to lead the market in a year they have no place to go but up while the 360 can only get worse, the WII will pretty much maintain a nice chuck of the pie.

It is nice to see the PS3 finally start to pick up some real numbers. I'll agree with Zippy (and many others) that it is still overpriced, no matter which model.
I think the PS3 will only continue it's upward movement this coming year.

Overpriced? I was one of those people who had faith in the Playstation brand since day one and bought the $600 60 gig unit. You say overpriced I say one of the cheapest blu-ray players on the market.

Oh, i'm an avid Playstation fan. I had faith in them too. I shelled out the $500.00 for the 80GB model, and don't regret it(although i should have bought the 60GB when i had the chance). I think it could stand to be $100.00 cheaper, if not more on the 40Gb model.
I'm not complaining about the price, i bought one. What i'm saying is a bit of price drop would've boosted sales right out of the gate.

Yeah at the beginning it would have been nice. At the time look at how much Sony was losing on each individual unit. The technology is cheaper now so it is not as devastating. The boost in sales has been rising due to the recent price cuts.

wich also proves that the ps3 cannot be any cheaper cuz they just can't
it's like asking a 1000$ laptop to be $500 wich cannot be done at least for now there's gonna a day when it probably cost 99 usd thought :)

It only going to get better for the ps3, now with blue ray the De facto winner in the DVD race. PS3 is better technology with a bigger up side then the 360. I have both system and yes I play the 360 more, but after Haze, MGS4, and the new home network come out on the ps3. My 360 is going to start collecting dust.

it seems obvious that price is behind the drop in sales, therefore it's no surprise to me that ps2 is still selling like crazy.
i can agree that the ps3 is the console to watch, but 360 isn't old tech. wii is definitely not a fad that's dropping off, and will likely dominate at least another year of sales.

the average consumer would, obviously, rather buy one of the cheapest game consoles on the market, even if it doesn't even play dvd.
like many, i don't need (or want) a blu-ray player.

Nor do I need another standard DVD player. They come with everything. Might as well come with toasters...

I work the stockroom at a local Walmart on weekends to help make ends meet and to this day we can't hardly keep Wii's in stock. They're gone as soon as we get them unlike the other two.

I talked to the electronics guy at Walmart the other day about the Wii and he said they get 7 in per week. =(
I don't know where they get sent but they aren't coming here very fast.
