Replacing a bluray drive?!?!

i dont know if any one can help me with this or not but here goes.

my mate brought a water damaged ps3 off ebay a while back etc and got it all sorted and it turns on and runs fine but it wont read any discs. from what i can tell it is all discs dvd blu-ray etc.

he got a new laser and replaced that but still nothing so he then bit the bullet and got a new drive from the states and was told that this would work with the unit but it wont read any thing still.

he has since been told that there is something with the drive controll board on the drive that are unique or sumin, is this true or has he been told a load of tosh and there is sumin more serious with the unit etc and cant be fixed.

any help at all that you could give me would be great :)
