SCPH-55006 wont play dvds??

Having purchased a ceramic white SCPH-55006 playstation 2, already modded so that I can play ntsc and PAL versions of games I tried playing dvds, the playstation always goes to the red screen that asks you to insert a ps1 or playstation 2 disc. I just brought the official playstation 2 dvd remote and i.r receiver and still no luck. How do I play dvds??
