disc read error bypass?

Hello there i was wondering if there is a way to bypass 'disc read error' that shows up on ps2...I saw an add of selling a ps2 that gets this message (i just asked if it was fat or slim) and I want to know if you can use the harddrive exploit with hd advance on this

The guy still has a sweet deal on this fat playstation...can I bypass the laser problem and load from an ide through the network adapter?
